  • Beautiful Books | My Favourite Book Cover Designs

    Favourite-book-covers

Hello my name is Ria and I’m a book magpie. What is that I hear you say? Well, as I wander the shelves of bookshops, unless I’m after a particular novel, I’m usually instantly drawn to the prettiest and most interesting covers before anything else. From fancy typography to beautiful illustration, I feel book cover design has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years. Here are five of my current favourites…

    Favourite-covers-Landline

    Landline by Rainbow Rowell

All of Rainbow Rowell’s books have fantastic and bright colour designs, but I adore Landline’s the most. From the sweeping typography, to the bold retro inspired illustration of the telephone, the whole thing is just so eye-catching. Not only is the dust jacket great, the book itself is a gorgeous mustard yellow colour with the same typography emblazoned on the spine.

    Favourite-covers-The-Hen-Who-Dreamed-She-Could-Fly

The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly by Sun-Mi Hwang

I was really taken by the plot summary of this book, but gosh isn’t the illustration on this stunning too? It’s so rare to find books that are so delicately designed these days and there’s such as a subtle beauty to this one. This is also a perfect example of beautiful back and inside cover design too.

    Favourite-covers-A-Monster-Calls

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

I’ve seen a couple of designs for A Monster Calls, but I knew when I saw this at YALC I had to have this one. Like The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly, this one is chock full of detail with illustrations that take inspiration from nature.

    Favourite-covers-The-Virgin-Suicides

The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides

Bold, striking with illustrations that hint at one of the novel’s themes. This is definitely my favourite edition of TVS that I’ve seen around and I love the metallic foiling on the roots of the tree.

    Favourite-covers-A-Beautiful-Land

The Beautiful Land by Alan Avrill

Normally I’d be fawning over the cover, but the spine of this book is really what I love the most on this occasion. The contrast between the text and backdrop is gorgeous and I love the subtle use of colours too. The spine’s design also carries onto the blurb’s typography, so clever!

So let me know what you guys think and leave me the names of some of your favourite book cover designs below!

  • Dare To Bare | How To Style A Crop Top

    how-to-crop-tops

Whilst I was writing up my TCA round up the other day, it became glaringly obviously that the trend for bare midriffs is not going anywhere. Now I don’t know about you but I’m deeply self-conscious about my stomach, and whilst Taylor Swift and Chloe Moretz may feel confident daring to bare it on the red carpet it can be a bit daunting to try out the crop in real life.

Never fear, the solution is all in the styling.

silk bomber jacket, The Outnet//black singlet, Monki//neon crop top, Topshop//grey singlet, Monki//maxi skirt, Topshop

Depending on how brave you’re feeling there’s a crop top styling solution for everyone. If you’re blessed with abs that would make Ellie Goulding weep, don’t be afraid to show them off (I know I would!), but take a leaf out of Moretz’ TCA styling and protect some of your modesty – and keep away the chill! – with a smart but eye-catching jacket. Alternatively balance out the material with a minimal style maxi skirt.

    crop-tops-medium

flower tank top, Weekday//orange crop top, BooHoo//high-waisted jeans, H&M//pencil skirt, Jane Norman//white skirt, Calvin Klein//red crop top, River Island

If you’re not so comfortable with showing off your skin, the key to working this trend lies with what you wear on your bottom half. Try a high-wasited skirt or trousers to balance out the crop and to show off a sliver of skin just above your abdomen.

    crop-tops-midway

crochet top, Topshop//pink crop top, Fashion Union//t-shirt crop top, Pull & Bear//grey skirt, Oliver Bonas//leather shorts, Alexander Wang//high-waisted shorts, Monki

Another alternative for the not so brave – and my favourite solution – is to meet midway and find a crop top with a tented cut that sits just above your belly-button, much like Nina Dobrev’s look from last week. Again, a high-waisted skirt will keep you feeling more comfortable and balance out the look.

So there you have it. You really have no excuse now! Dare to bare ;)
