Happy International Women’s Day! As today is all about celebrating the awesome-ness and achievements of incredible women all over the world, I thought I’d do my little bit to pay tribute to some inspiring women in the fashion world.

Despite the connotations of fashion being a women’s game, the design industry is still largely male dominated particularly when it comes to the top positions in world famous fashion houses. Think about it Chanel, Valentino, Elie Saab, Ralph Lauren, Alexander Wang etc. are all huge labels and all fronted by men. But us women are there and in some cases we’re kicking some serious butt.

It was pretty tough to choose, but this is my own personal list of my top five favourite female fashion designers, based on personal preference of the artistry behind their collections as well as the business acumen behind their labels. (more…)

  • A New Era | Oscar De La Renta A/W 2015 Collection

The first show after the passing of Oscar De La Renta was always going to be closely watched and the media buzz surrounding this particular collection felt very much like when Sarah Burton took over at McQueen back in 2001. De La Renta’s successor, Peter Copping, held the burden of carrying the label through this tough period and to deliver a collection within mere months before New York Fashion Week.

  • Salzburg Style | Chanel Metiers D’art Pre-Fall 2015

Whilst the world’s eyes were firmly fixed on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in London, there was another fashion powerhouse debuting it’s latest collection.

Chanel’s Metiers D’Art shows have gained quite the reputation for their unusual locations and fusion of local designs with a Chanel twist. This year’s show already caused controversy when Cara Delvigne AND Kendall Jenner both turned down VSFS to cosy up with Mr Largerfeld instead. But whilst Victoria’s Secret may have won out in the coverage stakes (AND had managed to secure Taylor Swift as a performer), Chanel have more than made up on the design front.

The Pre-Fall 2015 collection is very post-ski slopes/chateau chic with baroque details all mixed in with signature Chanel style. With luxurious coats and jackets in thick woollen fabrics and pieces in muted jewel tones, it’s a rather appropriately festive collection. There’s much less of the tweed and tartan from previous shows and more of a nod to traditional Germanic and Austrian motifs and folk culture. The evening wear part of the collection would not be out of place at a turn of the century gala, with the layers of tulle, sheer panels and intricate embroidery.

Also have you seen backdrop to the collection? A library! *le sigh* You know the way to a girl’s heart don’t you Karl?
