  • BRIT Awards 2013 | Red Carpet Fashion Round Up

Better late than never! The 2013 Brit Awards rolled around last Wednesday night and there was plenty of hype and drama both on and off the red carpet. Check out my highights…

    PF TS

A joint best dress at the awards. First up in a wonderful, sparkling Dolce and Gabbana mini and, get this, New Look heels, was the ever eccentric Paloma Faith. Paloma’s style may not be to everyone’s taste but I think this is one of her best looks to date. Her coiffed hairdo and many jewels only enhance this already colourful dress. Hats off to Ms Faith for her unique personal style!
Predictably Taylor Swift is once again on my best dressed radar. Elie Saab and Taylor go hand in hand at this point, and this gorgeous black gown with sheer panelling was another hit. I also loved the little gold accent from the belt pulling the whole look together.

    Emeli Sande 1.2.
Woman of the evening Emeli Sande had two outfit changes one the night. First up her simple black ruffle dress with pretty bow pumps on the red carpet, it’s nice but very same-y to stuff she’s worn before. I much prefered her onstage look. Her floral mini and pink jacket combo gave off a lovely retro feel, and paired with her trademark up-do. Much better Emeli!
A tale of two Jessies. Jessie J certainly went for a less gimmick-y look than she had in previous years in a black Versace gown with a plunging neckline. This is a much more mature look for Jessie, who’s styling was simple and her make up pretty much flawless. I am missing some colour from her though, but she looks great here so I’m not gonna complain too much. Relative newcomer Jessie Ware also went for black in a custom made Miu Miu outfit. Ware shunned the standard LBD format and dared to bare a little midriff. What could’ve been quite a trashy look ended up looking rather elegant. I also love the embellished sleeves.

Two girl-groups were out at the ceremony. Stoosche‘s Karis, Courtney and Alex walked the red carpet together in mismatch of looks. Karis wore a flowing grey Craig Lawrence gown, Courtney went for a very masculine Keko Hainwheeler suit with huge white flatforms, and Alex went for a Roland Mouret gown in the blue hue of the awards season. Karis and Alex’s looks are great but Courtney lets the group down a little. I get that she was trying to be different, but it’s such a stark contrast to the other two.
Speaking of contrasts, Little Mix were another band to attend the show. If you thought Stoosche’s looks were a mismatch take a look at these girls. Perrie Edwards and her lilac hair first, in a Natalia Kaut dress with a floral crown, then Jesy Nelson in a form fitting Celeb Boutique ‘Aysha’ strapless mini, Leigh-Anne Pinnock in a plunging white gown with a pink bow in her retro styled hair, and Jade Thirwall in a Mary Benson lbd and Steve Madden ankle boots. Individually these looks may have worked, but mashed up together as a girl group it’s just not right. Complete co-ordination may be too much but a little communication between the girls about what they were wearing (even just a theme girls, c’mon!) may have lifted them up higher on my radar. I will however go on record to say that I love Perrie’s outfit, very Pixie-Lott-esque.

Two ladies not quite hitting the spot either were Gemma Arterton and Lana Del Rey. Gemma’s looked great on the promo tour for her film but this sparkling Jonathan Saunders granny-cardi/skirt combo is a big thumbs down for me. You would think as one of fashion’s ‘dahlings’ and also nominated (and now winner) for Best International Female, you would make a big show of something like the BRITs. Lana really impressed me last year but she literally blended in the background in her Chanel (yes CHANEL) dress. C’mon Lana! I know for a fact you’ve got more in you than this!
    RO AF
Shimmering onto the red carpet next were Rita Ora and Aluna Francis. Rita Ora went for an pale coral/pink Ulyana Sergeenko gown, which is beautiful but seems to wash out her skin tone. Aluna Francis on the other hand went for a grey lace and sheer Theyskens’ Theory gown, lovely and ethereal.
    JD BM
It wasn’t all about the music on the night. Jourdan Dunn, hot off the LFW catwalks, strutted on to the red carpet in a bright yellow Balmain mini. Only a supermodel can pull this kind of dress off and it’s great that she’s brought some colour to a see of black gowns. Berenice Marlohe repped the Bond contingent in a shimmering Donna Karan Atelier. It’s very glam, very cleavage-y and very Hollywood.

  • The Grammy Awards 2013 | Red carpet fashion round up

Whilst actors were braving the rain in London for the BAFTAs, the music industry were gearing up for 55th Annual Grammy Awards were held in a sunnier L.A. this past Sunday. As usual it was a glitzy and outrageously glamorous affair, check out some of the highlights below.
You could probably see my best dressed from a mile off! Taylor Swift once again stole the show for me in a white J.Mendel gown with silver detailing. Elegant as always this look was styled with simple make up and a pretty heidi braid. It seems like it was a night for the country singers because Carrie Underwood came a close number #2 to Ms Swift! While Taylor went for white, Carrie went for a black lace gown by Roberto Cavalli. But don’t be fooled, she hasn’t gone all gothic on us! The whole look is classic Hollywood glamour and simply beautiful.

As always my eye was on the lookout for some Brit representation at the event. Florence Welch, went for an unusual green Givenchy Couture gown on the night. With it’s spiked shoulder details and shiny material I’m very much on the fence about this one, since she usually goes for something ethereal looking rather than space age (bar her Bestival outfits). The whole looks left me thinking this is perhapes a little too Gaga for Flo.
Adele is out of the black Burberry and into a patterned red Valentino Couture dress. I’m happy she’s showing some colour, but the print and cut of the dress feels a little too frumpy for Adele.
Carly Rae Jepsen went for a vampish Roberto Cavalli number, with sleek hair and dark make up, sometimes I forget this ‘Call Me Maybe’ singer is 27 years old! Rihanna danced with the devil in a firey red Azzedine Alaia gown. Though the colour was hot, Rihanna’s look was surprisingly demure for once styled with loose ombre hair.

As soon as I saw the twit pic of Alicia Keys‘ outfit I knew I would be breathing a sigh of relief! Her sleek minimalist Azzedine Alaia gown with sexy cut outs is a 100% improvement on anything she’s worn before. I don’t even mind the bouffant hair-do – as it shows of the dress in full. Kelly Osbourne seems to have gotten my memo and 1. tied that god-awful hair of her’s back 2. went for a Paule Ka dress that is eye catching yet wonderfully simple. Please keep this up Kelly!!
With Gaga AND Minaj noticeably absent at the show I had to look elsewhere to find some kooky-ness. Katy booby Perry is definitely never someone to shy away from the spot light and despite it’s bright colour her Gucci gown is rather demure for the singer…until you spot the elephant in the room peep out of that keyhole detail in the dress…Er…Despite this I think she looks great! Jannelle Monet was in her standard uniform suit and tie combo, this time with embellished lapels. Kimbra accepted her award in a Florence Welch-worthy Jaime Lee Major gown. This may be a divider but I love this from the OTT tulle to the gold embellishments, Kimbra is definitely indie enough to pull it off.
Right I know it’s the Grammys Kelly Rowland but hmmm….not sure about this one. On paper Kelly in a sleek black Georges Chakra gown with sheer panels to highlight her body sounds great, but in action she’s left looking a little overexposed (wasn’t there a no boobs or bums rule this year?). Jennifer Lopez normally brings a heavy hit of D.I.V.A. her Anthony Vaccarello dress makes her look like she’s wearing a duvet.

And finally the Knowles sisters were out on the town, I always feel like people are constantly pitting them against each other but their two Grammy outfits show me why you shouldn’t. Beyonce shyed away from the attention – well as much as Beyonce can – in a black and white geometric Osman jumpsuit. A pop of red lips and Sasha Fierce pose was all she needed work that spotlight. Never one to be afraid of colour Solange wore a glittering green Ralph & Russo Couture gown paired with coral pumps and her trademark afro hair do. Too much? Not for this Knowles. Two sisters and two very unique styles.

  • BAFTAs 2013 | Red carpet fashion round up

In a rainy London the 2013 BAFTAs were held with the celebs from across the film world braving the downpour for the night! Check out some of my highlights (and low lights) from the red carpet…
    MC JL
Easily the two best dressed for me were the ever gorgeous Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Lawrence. While others chose to mimic the grey skies over looking the Royal Opera House, these two stood out from the crowd. Marion was a welcome burst of yellow sunshine in her Dior Couture gown. Once again she shyed away from the status quo, giving us an impressive gown with unusual architecture and styled to perfection. Bravo Ms Cotillard. Jennifer was brave enough to take on white under the rainclouds – albeit sporting a winter coat outside before shedding in once in the warm. She too was wearing Dior, this time embellished with sleek hair. The beauty is in the dress’ simplicity here so a pair of jewel drop earring was all she needed. Both actresses have now set the bar for the big Oscar night – fingers crossed they don’t disappoint!

    AH EO
Anne Hathaway paid tribute to us Brits in a sleek Burberry gown. Anne once again looks beautiful here and the embellished top and sweet pink lips keep the look interesting enough for me. Elizabeth Olsen was another favourite of mine, taking a risk with Chanel Couture gown. I have a feeling this dress will split opinion but I love it. My only niggling point would be that I wish the peplum skirt looked as full as it did on the runway.

    AA SJP
A double whammy of Elie Saab from Amy Adams and Sarah Jessica Parker. Amy wore a gorgeous black lace gown with sheer panelling. I really love this on Amy, it’s something a little different to what she usually goes for and I’m glad she wore her hair up to show off the detailing on the dress. SJP’s jumpsuit was again something a little different, but unlike Amy, SJP simply blended right into the background. You expect fabulous when Sarah hits an event like this, especially something as high profile as the BAFTAs.

    JC AR
It wasn’t all doom, gloom and black dresses at the awards. Jessica Chastain looked stunning in a blue Roland Mouret gown. The dress itself has a slight minimalist quality about it but is styled up with old siren hair and classic red lips. Andrea Riseborough took a cue from Marion Cotillard with another bright yellow gown, this time Vivienne Westwood Couture, and like Jessica went for a classic Hollywood styling with simple jewels.

    JG GA
Another Roland Mouret gown came from actress Jennifer Garner. With it’s architectural detailing the gown was one of the more interesting down the red carpet, and if it weren’t for Elizabeth Olsen and Marion Cotillard then she probably would’ve been high on my best dressed list. She does look great here though! Gemma Arterton also took a risk in a graphic print Celia Kritharioti mermaid dress. I’m on the fence here. It’s certainly bold but I’m left feeling the horizontal stripes look wider than usual.

    HM TN
Helen Mirren was the talk of the BAFTAs, after debuting her soft pink hairdo. I’m still on the fence about the new look – though if anyone that age is gonna pull off pink hair it’ll be Helen Mirren – but I do love her pale blue Nicholas Oakwell Couture gown. From the embroidery to the layered skirt, it’s really beautiful. Thandie Newton equally turned heads in  vampish Louis Vuitton lace number. Again the dress is gorgeous, but the hair is a little questionable, perhaps for the Grammys but not the BAFTAs.

    SB JT
And finally two new-ish faces. Representing the Les Mis contingent with Anne, the ever beautiful Samantha Barks was taking a night off playing Nancy to arrive at the event in a Celia Kritharioti gown. The overall look is seductively sexy, but the cleavage may be a little too much on this occasion.
Winner of the rising star award Juno Temple looked very polished in Stella McCartney. This is the best I’ve seen Juno look on the red carpet, rising star indeed!
