  • MTV Movie Awards 2012: Red carpet fashion round up Part 1

As we enter June, one of Hollywood’s biggest awards shows rears it’s big, bold and brash head. The MTV Movie Awards were held in L.A. on Sunday night and it was certainly a big one to watch in terms of celeb spotting. As always I was keeping a weather eye out on the red carpet. Here are some of my favourites and passed judgement on who needs to do better.
Emma Watson made a grand old return to the red carpet, representing both the Harry Potter contingent and to promote her new film ‘The Perks Of Being A Wallflower’. She really impressed me wearing a super slick printed mini dress by Brood with strappy heels. There’s a definitely sport lux/Christopher Kane feel about this and I love the zip racerback detail. It’s also lovely to see her hair growing out again, I love her pixie cut but it was very restrictive in terms of styling. Very event appropriate Emma, bravo!

Suits were a popular trend last Sunday. Leighton Meester turned up looking very Miami cool in a white Christian Cota tailored shorts and sleeveless blazer. This look would’ve been perfect had the blazer been fitted for a sleeker look, but I do love her hair and make up on this occasion.
A much improve Shailene Woodley walked the red carpet in a tailored Stella McCartney jumpsuit. With her hair loosely braided, barely there make up and chic sandals, this is definitely a wonderful improvement from previous looks. Looks like someone got a new stylist.
And finally Janelle Monae worked her signature look, a tailored men’s style suit, brogues and hat, with a gorgeous pop of pink lipstick.
One woman grabbing the attention of everyone at the event was Kristen Stewart. She was without her on and off-screen boyfriend Rob Pattinson for the first time at the awards and wore a Guishem mini dress and black heels. I always feel a little underwhelmed by Kristen at awards like this, she really impressed me at the premiere of Snow White and the Huntsman in her gorgeous skeletal gown. She always sticks to the same formula and I wish she’d just break out of the mould a little with her styling.
As always young Hollywood was fully represented at this year’s awards. Lucy Hale stepped out in a colourful Catherin Maladrino mini, which I really love but wish her skirt wasn’t so creased. Victoria Justice looked extremely Summer-y Erin Fetherston dress with simple strappy heels and beach-y hair waves. Crystal Reed‘s Issa dress was actually one of my favourites from this collection but she completely weighed down such a dainty dress with very heavy ankle boots.
Young Hollywood weren’t the only ones to impress, Charlize Theron looked hot in a peplum Lanvin mini dress. She went for simple styling but looked amazing none the less. Christina Ricci‘s dress was nothing short of cool. She wore a custom made Christian Siriano mini dress, which was embellished with Timex watch faces. If only her shoe choice was just as inspired.
I’ll finished this part with the adorable looking Brie Larson. I’m a sucker for a collared shirt, so her gorgeous all white look ticks all the boxes for me!

Keep a eye out for Part 2!

  • The Hunger Games World Premiere L.A. – red carpet fashion round up

Oh you honestly didn’t think I wasn’t gonna do one of these did you? ;)
The Hunger Games world premiere was held last Monday in L.A. and to say it was quite the spectacle is quite an understatement. I’ve not seen a fandom so hyped since the mega franchises of Harry Potter and Twilight. I was certainly impressed by the cast, both leads and support actors, on the red carpet and there were also a few familiar faces amongst the tributes and Panem citizens…

First up, the girl on fire herself, Miss Jennifer Lawrence. Jennifer did Katniss proud and kicked down any competition for the best dressed in a stunning gold Prabal Gurung gown. I love the styling here, very simple to make sure the gown does the talking. Also check out the photo below for the back of the dress, really beautiful.

Two adorable young ladies I was looking forward to seeing were Willow Shields (who plays Primrose Everdeen, Katnss’ sister) and Amandla Stenberg (who play Rue). I’ll applaud both girls for dressing both event and age appropriate. Willow stepped out in a Marc Jacobs dress, which I’ll give her a pass. We’ve seen in the past (a la early Emma Watson) that it’s pretty hard for young girls like her to find dresses that fit, though I do hope she looks towards Chloe Moretz for future styling tips.
Amandla got an audible ‘Awww’ from me in her Collette Dinnigan dress. The dress itself is stunning and I love her silver accessories here.

Not wanting to be outshone by her younger co-stars was Elizabeth Banks. She stormed the event in her own firery Atelier Versace mini. Brilliant styling, hair and make up!

It’s no secret that this is probably the first and only Hunger Games premiere for this group of ladies, as they play just some of the main Tributes in the movie, so I was happy they all opted for the ‘Go big or go home’ approach to their looks. Isabella Furhman and Leven Rambin, the dangerous career Tributes looked a million miles away from their bloody on-screen counterparts. I’m completely in love with Isabella’s Oscar de la Renta dress, the vintage feel suits her perfectly and the pop of colour in her lipstick is just what the outfit needs. Leven certainly could’ve upstaged Jennifer in this red Chagoury Couture gown, but she kept the styling classic and classy. Both Kalia Prescott and Jackie Emerson brought a little drama too in their gowns.

It wasn’t all dresses on the red carpet. Kelly Osbourne and Leslie Man opted for slick suits. I’m not convinced about Kelly’s mismatched ensemble here but Leslie’s Monique Lhuiller jumpsuit is perfection.

And finally onto some of the filler attendees. My thoughts on all three were ‘well, at least they didn’t upstage the main cast’. Kendall and Kylie Jenner, played it safe in mini dresses (honestly I’m pretty pissed they got to go…and they haven’t even read the book ¬_¬). Shailene Woodley continues to disappoint me even after awards season, in an unshapely Honor gown. And finally Miley Cyrus, who I’ll concede has read the books and is dating one of the leads, in Emilio Pucci. Out of all of this gorgeous collection I’m not surprised she chose the midriff-underwear-brassiere ensemble. From the waist down she looks fine, I just hate the lingerie looking top.

Not one to end on a low note, the trailer for the film is below if you’re wondering what all the hype was about. And also READ THE TRILOGY. It’s a fabulous book series, I just hope they do the book justice!

  • The Oscars 2012 – red carpet fashion round up: part 2

Part 2 of my Oscar round up…

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an event that Meryl Streep has attended where she hasn’t just blown me away with her grace. She outshone many actresses half her age in a golden Lanvin gown, which very appropriately complimented her 3rd best actress Oscar. Again, take note Hollywood; this is how you age with grace.

I can’t have been the only to have been anxiously waiting the arrival of Michelle Williams on the red carpet, having at a roller coaster ride of looks this season. She divided opinions in a bright Louis Vuitton gown. I personally love this look on her. It’s still very much tailored to her style, but the added detail of the peplum skirt and vividness of the colour, that looks great with her slightly light hair shade, really helps this look stand out.

There were two actresses who made my jaw hit the floor. Cameron Diaz glowed in a gorgeous Gucci Premiere gown. This is such an improvement for Cameron and it’s almost like her newly cropped hair-do has given her a new lease on life. Angeline Jolie was equally as breathtaking in a black Atelier Versace dress. The colour and fit of the gown is no surprise for those who have followed Angelina’s red carpet fashion over the years, but there was something about her at this event that felt so different. She seemed happy and confident and worked the gown so well.

Two gorgeous glittering gowns came from Kate Mara (sister to Rooney Mara) and Oscar winner Octavia Spencer. Kate’s Jack Guisso Couture gown was beautifully bohemian, I love the soft feel of this whole look. Octavia worked an embellished Tadashi Shoji gown.

Two disappointing looks in a sea of gorgeous Oscar looks came from some surprising candidates. After her Rodarte gown whilst pregnant look at last year’s awards, Natalie Portman simply blended into the background in her vintage Dior gown. The look felt way too informal for an event like the Oscars, sorry Natalie! Sandra Bullock is usually so on point when it comes to her Oscar looks, but her Marchesa gown (can’t believe I’m actually putting down a Marchesa gown * sobs *) just doesn’t work here, the top half of the gown looks ill fitting and actually makes Sandra look wider.

Tina Fey and Glenn Close were much better looks. Glenn is another example of a woman who has aged so gracefully. I love her Zac Posen gown and the addition of the matching green jacket. Tina’s greatly improved on the red carpet and I love her peplum Carolina Herrera gown.

And finally we’ll end with the gorgeous Penelope Cruz. She embodied everything glamorous about the Oscars in Armani Prive, because as much as I crave the modern, minimalist and daring, there’s nothing quite like a classic Grace Kelly-esque look to get people’s attention.
