  • The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Premiere L.A. | Red Carpet Fashion Round Up

Easily the biggest franchise around at the moment, the Hunger Games has taken the crown of most hyped movie series since Harry Potter and Twilight. The L.A. premiere was held last Monday and swept into town with much fanfare. Here’s the round up of all the best and brightest from the event…
    Jennifer-Lawrence-Catching-Fire-LA-premiere
After an ok-ish run of looks from the previous premieres and the promo tour, Jennifer Lawrence finally pulled out all the stops for the L.A. premiere in a stunning Dior Haute Couture gown. There’s very little that I don’t like about this look, from her gorgeous new hair-do to flawless make-up to the broad geometric belt. Some may argue she may have flashed a bit too much flesh, but I actually think she’s pulled this off very tastefully, this is a perfect example of how the sheer trend can work so well – and it should be noted that the runway styling actually comes without the top, Jen opted for a bodysuit underneath.
    Elizabeth-Banks-Jena-Malone-Catching-Fire-LA-premiere
Two ladies I was certainly looking forward to seeing from at this premiere was red carpet star Elizabeth Banks and cast newcomer Jena Malone. Elizabeth definitely didn’t let me down in a mind blowingly bold Versace gown and again, there’s very little I don’t like about this look. Styled to perfection but with no accessories, this dress didn’t need it any extra bling. It’s a showstopper.
Jena’s been the wildcard of the cast during the premieres but I’m so glad for it. She donned a glittering and peek-a-boo panelled gown by Nicholas Oakwell. Like JLaw’s look, there’s a lot of skin here, but she does pull it off tastefully and with a fabulous devil may care attitude. Simple styling, again, let’s the dress do the talking here, no OTT make-up or overly styled hair needed.
    Willow-Shields-Stephanie-Leigh-Schlund-Meta-Golding-Lynn-Cohen-Catching-Fire
The supporting cast were equally as impressive at the event. Willow Shields has come a long way since her first venture out on the red carpet at The Hunger Games premiere. The young actress looked oh so elegant in Katie Ermilio, printed with pale blue flowers. Such a wonderful princess moment for her, yet she looks so grown up too! A trio of newcomers next. Blonde and beautiful Stephanie Leigh Schlund, looked positively angelic in a very pretty lace gown accompanied by retro waves that would make Taylor Swift jealous. If Stephanie was an angel, Meta Golding was a red hot devil in Georges Hobeika gown. The gown itself is gorgeous – I particularly love the thigh high split – , I’m just not sure about the mix of metallic with her jewellery and shoes. And finally Lynn Cohen looked adorably eccentric in her purple and black dress, with boho-chic necklaces.
    Jackie-Emerson-Isabelle-Fuhrman-Catching-Fire-LA-premiere
Some former tributes also made an appearance at the premiere to support their Hunger Games castmates. Jackie Emerson wore a pretty berry coloured skater dress (which I really want for myself now!), styled with simple black accessories and the fierce Isabelle Furhman went for an OTT tulle Christian Siriano dress. The dress is amazing and so is the glint of gold from her headband, the shoes, however, let down the look. Too high and far too heavy for such a pretty dress.

    Keirnan-Shipka-Bella-Thorne-Sarah-Hyland
Of course, young Hollywood were out to impress at the premiere too. The ever-adorble Keirnan Shipka once again continues to impress in a pretty Miu Miu top and skirt, green embellishments on the pockets and collar. Bella Thorne donned a look that I’m finally happy with. Her Blumarine gown was lovely and ethereal looking, and perfectly styled with a messy braid. I’m seriously on the fence about Sarah Hyland‘s Sass and Bide mini. I feel like the front half of the dress is a little too fussy and the black heels weigh it down a bit, a pass on the dress but her hair and make up are on point for sure!

    Zoe-Lenny-Kravitz-Catching-Fire-LA-premiere
Not everyone would take the option to walk down the red carpet with their dad, but I think if we were Zoe Kravitz we’d all make an exception. Supporting the legend that is Lenny Kravitz, who plays Cinna in the series, Zoe wore an minimalist Balenciaga mini. Styled with simple black sandals and thin gold choker, Zoe has enough confidence and cool to carry off this look. Dad, Lenny, also rocked the red carpet in Saint Laurent. Hopefully we’ll see more of these two on the red carpet as Zoe starts promoting her own Dystopian series, Divergent.
    Josh-Hutcherson-Liam-Hemsworth-Sam-Claflin-Catching-Fire-LA-premiere
And obviously we can’t leave the rest of the boys out of the equation! Leading man Josh Hutcherson looked pretty slick in a Dolce & Gabbana suit, the ever handsome Liam Hemsworth paired up with JLaw, also picking out a Dior designed suit; and repping the Brits was the lovely and smiley Sam Claflin in grey Alexander McQueen.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is released in UK cinemas TOMORROW 21st November – Eeeeek!

  • MTV VMAs 2013 | Red Carpet Fashion Round Up

An night of celebrating sucess and excess, I felt like this year’s MTV Video Music Awards held at the Barclays Centre in New York were the most lavish, controversial and bizarre that I’ve seen in the past few years. As usual the red carpet was a show in itself and in true VMA style there were plenty of ups and downs.
    Ellie-Goulding-Taylor-Swift

First up my best dressed ladies. I um-ed and ah-ed about this one for a while but finally settled on the stunning Ellie Goudling in her head-turning Amato Couture gown, which was embellished with dozens of silver spikes. With tousled hair and natural make up, Ellie only needed to let the gown do the talking here. Runner up should be no surprise to you all. My girl Taylor Swift vamped it up to the max in a deep navy Hervé Léger gown.  Styled up with 1940’s glamour, complete with vintage waves andred lipstick, the gown provided the modern twist with it’s subtle panels and plunging neckline.
    Rita-Ora-Holland-Roden
Showstopping gowns are always the big thing at the VMAs and this year was no exception. After last year’s jumpsuit Rita Ora upped her game in a Alexandre Vauthier gown, complete with feathered train – which was carried up and down the red carpet – embellished plunge neck and thigh high split. Rita also styled this eccentric look with a sleek minimalist bob cut. If it weren’t for the big black belt I would’ve rated this look so much but the colour is too much of a contrast to the light blue tones of the gown.
Next up is Holland Roden, the Teen Wolf star is becoming one of my favourites to look out for on the red carpet and I was certainly loving her Naeem Khan dress gown. The gown not only comes with a completely embellished top, but has added trousers under the skirt of the dress. It’s very VMA appropriate and had it not been for the trouser detail this might have faded into the background. As always her make up is also on point and her slicked back hair and bold lip go great against the nude of the dress.
    Katy-Perry-Lady-Gaga
It was a night of comebacks for two of the biggest stars in pop. Katy Perry was one of the first big names on the red carpet on the night and stepped out in an Emanuel Ungaro leopard print mini with her hair piled into a high ponytail to show off those intricate shoulder details. You may recognise this as the mini version of the gown Coco Rocha wore the gown to The Met Gala recently. This is actually quite subdued for Katy, who’s definitely over her blue hair phase, and did feel much more mature than childish glam. The was a twist of course though that Ms Perry couldn’t resist….grills. Ugh. Thankfully she took them out for a few photos.
Lady Gaga was another name everyone was desperate to see, having previously arrived at the awards show in Meat, as a Man and McQueen. Which is why her looked shocked me. Much like Katy Perry, Gaga seems to have toned down the crazy for the this year’s ceremony and wore a custom Prabal Gurung gown. Apart from the dominatrix nature of the look with all of the leather, she looked fairly normal with her sleek black wig and almost natural make up – the only pop of colour was her coral lipstick. Part of me is disappointed she didn’t go for something more lavish, the other half of me thinks she was saving it all for her epic performance – hello sea shell bra. Yep definitely still a little ‘out-there’.
    Miley-Cyrus-Erin-Wasson
With Perry and Gaga out of the running for most controversial looks of the night this leaves me with these two for the bottom of the pile. Miley Cyrus was the talk of the town for all of the wrong reasons. Performance aside – my eyes still haven’t recovered – Miley walked the red carpet in a Dolce & Gabbana crop top and trousers. The looks is almost bearable, sans the embellished garter…, but it the styling that I’m so put off by. The chunky black platforms, bright red lip and part-shaved-part-90’s-hair-buns scream Gwen Stefani circa 1997. But you’re not Gwen, Miley, this is 2013 and you’re trying too hard.
Another questionable look came from model Erin Wasson, who wore a very revealing Alexandre Vauthier gown, which was completely sheer bar a few strips of fabric to cover parts of her modesty. The whole look leaves nothing to imagination but I do question whether it’s actually kinda perfect for the VMA’s? And can she get away with this considering her model status?
    Iggy-Azalea-CIara
It wouldn’t be the VMAs without some flashes of skin. I was on the fence about Iggy Azalea‘s choice of Emilio Pucci gown in sheer gold, but matched with her sleek updo and bold lip the whole thing ended up really catching my eye without the whole ensemble looking too try-hard. Ciara was another who dared to bare. Her Givenchy Couture gown veered on the prettier side in a pale pink and looked rather elegant with her loose waves and all natural make up.
    Selena-Gomez-Naya-Rivera
Two women giving some va-va-voom glamour to the night were Selena Gomez and Naya Rivera. A very grown up looking Selena wore a dark navy Atelier Versace gown. It was daring with it’s thigh high split, metallic embellishments and lace bustier detailing, but I can’t deny she looks great here. Even when she’s technically supposed to be in the backdrop Naya manages to make an entrance. Despite it’s colour, her jet black Paco Rabanne offered some subtle with discrete cut out details on along the waist and shoulders. Simple. Sexy. Bravo Naya!
    Crystal-Reed-Ariana-Grande-Sarah-Hyland
A few extra looks from the red carpet also included Crystal Reed, who’s gorgeous – though a little plain – Zac Posen gown just melts into the backdrop. Had this been a higher brow January Awards season look she would’ve gotten my vote for one of the best dressed but alongside some of the bigger stars on the night the dress and styling felt a bit too Golden Globes for my liking. Singer Ariana Grande wore a very sweet Kenley Collins mini with matching heels. The print was the perfect injection of Summer I was craving for with a lot of the looks on the night and looks great with her more natural hair colour. I wanted to like Sarah Hyland‘s Marchesa gown – plus it’s definitely one of my favourites from the collection – but I can’t get my head around it. Sarah’s so tiny that the gown seems to swamp her and it also seems to have lost some of it’s original structure in the skirt.
    Coco-Rocha-Jennifer-Hudson-Shailene-Woodley
It wasn’t all gowns and dresses, three ladies dared to be a little different and pulled their personality into their outfits. Model Coco Rocha rocked the biker chic look in Fausto Puglisi, but it’s her attitude that sets this look off perfectly! Jennifer Hudson looked stunning in a houndslooth top and leather skirt look by Christian Dior. With her sleek long hair and black out accessories, she definitely looked great on the night. Actress Shailene Woodley‘s always been a test-y subject on round ups gone by but she’s finally doing it right on the red carpet in her Emilio Pucci skirt and crop top combo hit all the right notes with me. Shailene also debuted what I’m calling her ‘Hazel’ hair, which she recently cut off for her role in TFIOS and donated to charity. Hopefully this fresh spin on her look is a sign of things to come with Divergent and TFIOS press tours/premieres on the way!

So what did you think? And what were your best and worst looks from the night?

  • Met Gala 2013 | Red Carpet Fashion Round Up | Part 2

Rocking up for part number 2 of my the Met Gala round up. Make sure to check up in part 1 to see what you missed too!
    Dakota-Fanning-Elle-Fanning
Two sets of, literally, satorial sisters next. First up the fashionable Fannings. Normally rather demure and fashion forward on the red carpet, Dakota Fanning went revealing and simple for this event. Dakota’s Rodarte gown showcased some midriff, cleavage and back. The embroidered detailing on the back is gorgeous but the whole look left me thinking whether or not she could’ve pulled something a little riskier. You could tell Elle Fanning had fun with this one. Her Rodarte gown, in subtle red, white and blue (yes I saw that tribute Elle) was a great choice for her not to mention her dramatic eye-make up (also in red, white and blue).
    Beyonce-Solange-Knowles
Next the Knowles’. Beyonce at a do’ celebrating punk certainly feels like an oxymoron, but nope Queen B manages to work that red carpet like she was born on it. As if the fire-y print skirt and snakeskin bodice on her Givenchy gown weren’t enough, she also wore matching flaming boots and dominatrix style gloves. This may not be Sid Vicious punk but the whole look definitely has enough attitude to fit within the night’s theme.
Solange Knowles pulled out a funky look for the Gala in bold printed Kenzo dress. Complete with mega afro and geometric earrings, Solange looks like she’s could’ve stepped out of a Rolling Stones concert from the 60’s.
    Taylor-Swift-Rita-Ora-Gwen-Stefani-Katy-Perry
It’s no surprise the music stars were also out to pay homage to punk culture and in true musician style, they were an ecclectic bunch. My girl Taylor Swift shoved the pretty princess act for the night in a high neck J.Mendel gown. Though Mendel is her favourites for red carpet events, this is quite a departure from the usual. No red lipstick, no floaty tulle, ruffled bed head…though she can’t quite let go of her sequins with the gown’s neckline. I like the more ruffled and harder edged looks on Taylor, wish she’d pull out something like this more often.
Rita Ora’s first outing at the Met Gala was surprisingly elegant for the singer. Usually one to look like she’s trying too hard, this simple white Thakoon gown with tiny chain details looks effortless on her. I don’t even mind the orange lip colour either!

If there was one woman who was going to nail this year’s theme, it was gonna be Gwen Stefani. So of course I’m loving her custom Maison Martin Margiela two piece. It may be a monochromatic look but it’s not boring paired with Gwen’s trademark red pout and No Doubt attitude.

Ms Katy Perry decked herself out in gold and silver on the night. Not only was her Dolce & Gabbana midi dress embellished within an inch of its life, but she also wore huge cruxafix earrings and a crown…yes. A freaking crown. It’s been a while since Katy went for an OTT look on the red carpet so this was a nice surprise.
Gin Goodwin went for a golden Tory Burch gown on the night. The Once Upon A Time actress plays Snow White, but she’s channelling the Evil Queen here. The gown is great but the OTT Black Swan make up is a perhaps too much, even for punk.
Amanda Seyfried went bold with prints in a Givenchy couture gown (from 2007). This kinda of print could’ve been in danger of drowning her, but she carried it off with a little flair.
    Kim-K-Kirsten-Dunst-Nikki-Minaj
It was a big no, no, no for Kim Kardashian’s latest step onto the red carpet. Her Givenchy gown, with built in gloves, was a complete mess of print and all kinds of wrong. It’s a wonder why Ms Wintour even let her into the event and no wonder why Kanye looks so baffled.
Kristen Dunst wore a green and feathered Louis Vuittonnumber on the night that I can’t get behind. The styling feels lazy and her shy and sweet attitude doesn’t quite pull off the drama behind this gown.
I can’t believe I’m saying this but this Tommy Hilfiger gown is far too subtle for Nikki Minaj and I want more eccentric from her…I know right? Off all the awards ceremonies and red carpets Nikki chooses the MET GALA to tone it down. I can’t win with her can I?
    kate-beckinsale-minka-kelly
It wasn’t all about the grungy black gowns. Kate Beckinsalewent for a sophisticated Alberta Ferretti mini dress with amazing architectural detailing on the skirt. Had it not been hot pink I probably would’ve written this off as dull, but alas, this plus the shard-like earrings are a winner for me.
I had to take a second look at Minka Kelly’s photo…I thought it was Leighton Meester. Oops! Nevertheless her plum coloured Carolina Herrera is more steam-punk than hard edge punk, but it still looks amazing on her.
    uma-thurman-anna-wintour
The winner of the ‘Sorry I didn’t get the theme memo’ goes to actress Uma Thurman. As gorgeously old school Hollywood her Zac Posen gown is, it’s completely wrong for the Met Gala this year. The event is called PUNK: CHAOS COUTURE, save a dress like this for the Oscars Uma.
If there was one person who can get away with going ‘screw the dress code’ it’s Anna Wintour. She didn’t stray far away from her usual style, this time a flora floor length Chanel gown. But y’know what? She’s Anna freakin’ Wintour. She can do what she wants.
    lily-collins-blake-lively
Someone who definitely read the dress code memo was actress Lily Collins who went all out in a Moshino dress, embellished biker jacket and even had a blue streak in her hair. Her age and model-esque looks carry this look and keep it from looking like a total disaster.
Blake Lively also went for an edgier look than normal and strutted the red carpet in a two-tone grey Gucci Premiere gown. At first it’s pretty standard for Blake, but a closer peek at the skirt detailing and that’s where the ode to the punk theme comes in. The silver embellishments around the waistline matched well with her edgy earrings and seem to flow into a feather-like black train.
    mary-kate-ashley-olsen
The Olsen twins went for a more 70’s spin on the punk theme. Ashley Olsen wore a faded Dior gown, draped with lace, with embellishment peeking out from underneath, Mary-Kate Olsen went for her typical boho look with Chanel and fur coat. Both ladies were, unsurprisingly, wearing vintage looks from the two designers but I have to wonder whether they’ll ever change their tune on the red carpet?
    sarah-jessica-parker
And finally, Sarah Jessica Parker is used to making an entrance when it comes to the Met Gala (anyone her famous McQueen ballgown?). So when she stepped out in her gold-leaf print Giles gown, velvet Louboutin boots and impressive Philip Treacy headpiece, it stopped people in their tracks. I think this one’s a grower, but you have to give kudos to SJP for letting go and having fun with this look.

So what did you guys think of the Met Gala? And who were your hits and misses?
