Meet Gabrielle Aplin. The British singer-songwriter exploded onto the music scene last year thanks to her cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s ‘The Power of Love’ for the famous John Lewis Christmas ad. Fast forward to Summer 2013 and Aplin is on the bill at countless music festivals and gearing up for a headline tour in the Autumn having stormed the charts with singles ‘Please Don’t Say You Love Me’‘Panic Cord’ and, the most recent, ‘Home’, and her album ‘English Rain’. She may seem like a relative newbie but like alot of musicians she’d been sharing her music through sites like YouTube since she was 14. Her sound is a a mix of classic acoustic guitar and beautiful lyrics with a sound reminiscent of Joni Mitchell or a female Ed Sheeran.

A veteran in the music biz, but a novice in terms of style, Aplin is still finding her feet in terms of fashion. At gigs it’s all about comfort, shorts, jeans, t-shirts and denim, usually with a kind of Francoise Hardy flair, accompanied by her trusty acoustic guitar. But she’ll also occasionally break out the indie-chic dresses or pretty feminine blouses, which goes perfectly with her English rose complexion.

But she’s now been snapped by TopShop for their UK site and chosen some of her favourite items from the brand. She’s also sporting an edgier look, with brighter shades and a cool pop of red lipstick. A sign of things to come, fashion-wise? I certainly hope so!

What about you guys? Are you a fan of Gabrielle?

Long time readers will know of my affinity with a certain group of Internet creatives called Team Starkid. Though my obsession for them knows no bounds, it’s certainly not limited to their crazy skits and infamous affiliation with the Potter franchise but also their equally talented friends. And those who know of Team Starkid’s antics will know all about, Charlene Kaye.

Charlene is a Hawaiian born singer songwriter, hailing from  New York, has build herself up through the Internet music scene with her unique blend of indie-pop. Her music is an infusion of electro synths, rip-roaring guitar riffs and catchy, yet beautifully woven lyrics, all topped off with her commanding soulful voice. She’s a blend of both classic and contemporary, who sounds just as good live as on her records (well from what I’ve seen and heard from YouTube she has!). With buddies like Team Starkid and Glee’s Darren Criss, her talent has taken her across America and has gained an underground legion of fans from across the globe – including little ol’ me!

Not only a multifaceted musician, to say she’s a sharp dresser would be a complete understatement. Her personal style, much like her music, is completely unique. From her Bowie-esque turns in the ‘Animal Love 1’ music video to sleek yet elegant in ‘Forever Is A Long Time‘ and ‘Human‘; to a complete grunge make-over whilst in her side band ‘Guns & Hoses’; to cute and preppy in ‘Dress & Tie‘; and even 40’s fabulous in ‘Mad Tom of Bedlam‘. She’s an eccentric to the core.

  • A New Breed Of Girl Band | Haim

It’s so hard to find decent girl bands with guitars these days…so when Haim were recently announced the winners of BBC’s Sound of 2013, with their blend of R&B style synths, Fleetwood Mac-esque cool and killer hypnotic vocals, you could say I was pretty chuffed.

Hailing from California, the trio of sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim are not only set to take the music world by storm this year but have gotten fashion pundits and the blogsphere talking with their nu-hipster style. The girls draw inspirations from 70’s folk to tailored menswear to pretty vintage dresses to 90’s grunge all topped off with their soon-to-be signature long brunette locks. They’ve already modelled for ASOS and are tipped ones to watch by Vogue, Company and Interview magazine.
For me not only is their infectious music a breath of fresh air in a pure pop industry (and a welcome change to the drawl of Lana Del Ray – sorry not sorry :P) but their style, though not entirely new, is both fashion forward yet completely wearable…not to mention the fact they come Florence Welch-approved, can’t argue with that right?
But don’t let the pretty appearances fool you…these girls know how to play like the big boys….

    What do you guys think?
    Keep on wishing…
