  • Shades Of Brown | Diversity Isn’t Just Black & White

    At the 70th Annual Tony Awards a few weeks ago, the four (arguably) biggest acting wins of the night went to people of colour – Leslie Odom Jnr, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Cynthia Erivo, and Daveed Diggs. It was a historic moment in the ceremony’s history and a wonderful antithesis to this year’s #OscarsSoWhite backlash.

    Now as much as I don’t want to take away the significance of this particular moment from these four incredibly talented actors a little voice in the back of my head saying ‘It’s not enough’.

  • Playlist | Best of the Broadway Musicals 15/16 Season

    Happy Tony Awards Eve!

    Tonight is the biggest night in every theater geek’s calendar as the 70th Annual Tony Awards ceremony will once again be held live at Radio City Music Hall in New York City tomorrow evening. To get you in the mood I thought I’d send you off with a little playlist of the best of this year’s season of Broadway musicals.

    It really has been a stellar year on the Big White Way with both impressive revivals and innovative brand new pieces of work. And even though Hamilton is likely to dominate the night with their record breaking 16 nominations there are more absolute gems both on the nominee list and sadly snubbed by the voters that are definitely worth the listen to as well!

  • Thoughts On ‘Waitress’ & Women In The Narrative

    So just over a week ago, on our last night in New York, my sister and I headed off to the Brooks Atkinson Theater to watch one of the preview performances of the new musical Waitress. The musical is based on the 2006 movie penned by Adrienne Shelly, starring Keri Russell as a down and out waitress called Jenna in small town America who finds out she’s pregnant with her not-so-fabulous husband’s baby.

    Aside from trying not to freak out because Sara Bareilles was sat watching the show in the stalls downstairs and fangirl-ing when Jessie Mueller (who plays Jenna in the musical marvelously) came on stage, after coming out of the theatre I found myself awake with too many thoughts on what I’d watched and about women on Broadway in general.
