  • TAG! | 8 Nerdy Things About Me

    Here’s a secret I bet you didn’t know…I’m a nerd *cue sarcastic laughter* but seriously I came across the 8 nerdy things about me tag on Hayley’s blog so thought I’d have a little fun and do the list myself! Enjoy…

    1. You can put money on the fact that I’m a treasure trove of Harry Potter trivia.
    From the cool (It’s likely Maggie Thatcher was the Prime Minister that tried to chuck the Minister of Magic out the window – if you consider the 1990s timeline of the books) to the absolutely unnecessary (Professor Quirrell was a Ravenclaw). It would probably be my chosen subject on Mastermind to be honest.
    2. I sit and watch TED Talks online…for fun.
    Seriously, it’s my favourite discovery of 2013 and it doesn’t feel like you’re wasting time watching them because you’re learning.
    3. I went to a freaking fandom convention and was more scared about meeting Youtubers than actors like Evanna Lynch. 
    I mean c’mon if that doesn’t count I don’t know what does?
    4. I buy DVDs based on their behind the scenes content and would rather have the director’s commentary on than watch the actual film. 
    You guys don’t wanna know how many times I’ve watch behind the scenes stuff for LotR or The Social Network…no really you don’t…this was also my reasoning for buying the recent Star Trek: Into The Darkness DVD – bonus features on rebuilding the Enterprise? Hell yeah!
    5. My ideal holiday would include exploring a museum instead of lying around a pool getting a tan.
    This may be to do with the fact I’m already kinda tan skinned, but sign me up to go to a history museum any day. 
    6. I like to think I’m an expert at anything musical theatre related. 
    Kinda like point 1. I have so much useless knowledge about Broadway, West End, Off-Broadway, Regional Theatre stored in my brain it’s ridiculous.
    Like I bet you didn’t know Iwan Rheon (Simon from Misfits) was also in the West End production Spring Awakening as Moritz? And the composer/lyricist for Spring Awakening, Duncan Sheik is currently producing the music and lyrics for American Psycho the musical – starring Matt Smith from Doctor Who? Yeah…well, I do so that’s nice…
    7. I get really excited visiting bookshops 
    (Not in that way you perverts!) But ugh the smell of new books and discovering new authors and finding your favourites and subtly moving their books to the shelves where people can see them…yep.
    8. I talk my family’s ears off analysing TV adverts… 
    There’s a reason why I’m studying advertising and PR at University y’know!

  • 2013 | In Retrospect

    2013 was the year I…

    …finished my professional placement and started up my final year at University. 

    …hit two blogging milestones: 3 years with Wishing For Chanel and 150 followers!

    …spent a summer revealing in geekiness at LeakyCon London with my best friend Kath.

    …met some of my personal heroes in the form of Team Starkid, Hank Green, Evanna Lynch, Melissa Anelli and made new geeky friends at said convention.

    …stepped out of my comfort zone and reached out to the blogging community both online and IRL.

    …went travelling to the HP Studio tour, Brighton, London (multiple times) and Salisbury

    …saw more musical theatre, both professional and amateur. 

    …celebrated 1 year with Blogger’s Bookshelf and finally met my co-captain Erin!

    …reconnected with old friends and cemented the friendships I already had. 
    My oh my it’s very nearly the end of 2013 and this morning I emptied my little memory box that I started filling at the start of the year. My definite highlight was LeakyCon in the Summer, but reading back some of the smaller memories from catch ups with friends and silly things I’ve fangirled over. 
    I was actually struggling to remember what actually happened this year! It’s safe to say 2013 went by me in a blur and I’ve got a funny feeling 2014 is gonna fly by just as fast. 
    There’s already a lot to look forward to both big (finishing University D:), small (seeing Taylor Swift :P) and undetermined (NYC? A new job?). As cliched as it is, a new year is a new start and I’m both scared and excited to begin again!

  • Working Girl | Retrospective On My Year-Long Work Placement

    If you saw my Sunday post, you’ll know that I’ve just finished my year long work placement as a Marketing Support Assistant last Friday. The placement was part of my University course structure, though I did have to go through dozens of applications for dozens of companies before I finally got the interview for my Marketing post last year.

    If I was honest I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. This would be the first I’d ever worked in an office and in an environment that was completely different to the shop floor retail work I had been used to since I was 16. I’d also be commuting 5 days a week – at least until I moved offices – and working in a job I only had academic knowledge of…so yep a little bit scary.
    I won’t go into detail about what I did during the year, partly for privacy, partly because the year went by so quickly and so much happened that it would be impossible to sum up the whole experience in a blog post – I’m having trouble enough summing it up in an essay for University!

    Looking back in retrospect I do feel more confident in myself and what I want to go into as a career. I’ve had to work with an hugely diverse group of people, and dealt with people in the firm with decades worth of professional work experience in their career path. I was lucky enough to be given responsibilities that actually weren’t in my remit when I started the placement and was trusted enough to help out with huge project work. I learnt that I’m a list person, that practice makes perfect and it’s ok to be confused – people WILL NOT bite your head off if you ask questions. I’ve had to experience difficult situations, team and strategy changes, not mention problematic printers (seriously though I hate printers).
    I could go on but in summary I couldn’t have asked for a more fulfilling year, will miss my team oh-so-much (I cried on my last day…just sayin’) and (as cheesy as it sounds) will be going back to Uni for my final year with a renewed outlook on life.

    I know many of you guys will be heading back to school/University and some may already be on or applying for Internships/Work Experience/Placements etc. I could write a million tips on survival but here are my top 5….

    1. Get stuck into anything and everything | You’re there to gain experience to go out and get as much as you can. From taking on daunting projects to something as simple as learning how to work a photocopier, these are all things that you may end up having to do in the future.
    2. Getting to know you | People love talking about themselves, so ask what they’re doing, what their job actually involves, what their own route into the role was…etc. Not only is this a good way of getting to know you’re colleagues but they may even have followed an alternative route into the industry you want to go into!
    3. Make contacts | Whether it’s physically them writing down, keeping a stock of business cards, or using LinkedIn make sure you keep in touch with those you’ve worked with, it could prove useful in the future when you’re actually making your way into a working role.
    4. Be gracious but have a voice | In the current economic climate it’s tough enough trying to get any kind of experience. An internship is a great way of getting something to put on your CV to make you stand out. So when you’re stuck doing the more mundane parts of the job, remind yourself to be grateful for your position, suck it up and hit the ground running with the task. Like Miranda Priestly says “A million girls would kill for your job”. That being said if you’re struggling, speak up! Like I said above people won’t bite your head off for asking a question.
    5. Everyone deserves tea* (or coffee!) | It’s a cliche right? The intern/tea maker but if there’s one thing I learnt over the year is that no matter how stressed or dull the day is a cup of tea (or coffee) goes a long way! It gives you a chance to have a break, get to know your co-workers and well…coffee is nectar of the Gods. Also pro-tip…learn how people like their drinks, you’d be surprised as how grateful they’ll be when you can rattle off the order straight away!
