  • Mad [Wo]Men | A twist on lady like style for SS 2013

SS13 Mad Women header Fashion comes and goes but there are sometimes occasions when designers decide to shake things up a bit. Take three of my favourite collections from across the fashion weeks, Temperley London, Vivienne Westwood Red Label and Holly Fulton. All three designers took on the classic ‘lady-like’ trend that tends to roll around every few seasons.
But this time they did it with a twist.
The lovely ladies presented on the runways showcased some of the typical features of this trend, pretty mid length skirts, button down shirts, and clothes that leave you with a sense of nostalgia. But the looks were slightly skewed.

Peek-a-book panels were twisted and presented against a mismatch of garish prints, with no outfit felt completely put together but in a good way. Shirts and blouses were loose, lazily hanging off shoulders at Vivienne Westwood; lazer cut lace detailing hinted at bodies underneath the demure dresses at Temperley; and Holly Fulton pulled out a brave set of colours, shapes and sheer.
Think granny chic your granny wouldn’t be dare wear. Think housewife gone mad.

Even the beauty details were bold, fresh and youthful. With splashes of blue eyes and coral lips, all topped off with a variety of ‘old school’ do’s, backcombed and brushed to messy perfection.

So what do you guys think? Are you on board with this slightly off kilter look?

  • Everybody’s doin’ a brand new dance now | Swinging Style at Olympia Le-Tan S/S13

Admittedly up to this point in my little journey about learning and loving fashion, the name Olympia Le-Tan only meant one thing…adorably awesome handbag books. Normally the favourite kooky accessory of the like of Clemence Posey or Natalie Portman, this little bags took a backseat to one of the best shows from Paris Fashion Week.
Taking cues from the Swinging Sixties and soulful divas of yester-year the collection was a feast for a vintage lover’s eyes, with tea dresses, high waisted short shorts and pop socks galore. Better known for their bag range, this emerging clothing designer did well capturing the spirit of the era, with ice-cream colours and lady-like prints sure to be a hit with the celeb crowd.
The best part of the show by far was the presentation of the clothes themselves. Models paraded onto a stage and danced along to The Locomotion before Ronnie Spector wrapped up the show – have a gander at the video below if you don’t believe me!

I love shows that trill both in terms of fashion and design, as well as presentation and just general fun. So this one ticked all of the boxes.

  • A taste of exotic opulence: Marchesa Spring 2013

When fashion week season comes around you expect a little bit of drama. When the fashion world awaits a new season collection from Marchesa they expect nothing short of a theatrical spectacle. Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman did not disappoint. The pair looked East for inspiration, taking on Bollywood and took it to the New York. The whole collection was a feast for the senses with silk, tulle, embellishments galore, all with hints of style taken from Indian culture. As per usual the gowns were Oscar ready and I can see this whole collection becoming a fast red carpet favourite.
Personal favourites were the stunning dark blue gown set off with gold embroidered detail around the bust [I can definitely see the celebs fighting to get a hold of that one] and this amazing fringed scarlet gown, set off with matching blood red beading.

Very rarely do the little things matter so much to a collection but Marchesa have paid just as much attention to the smaller detailing of their styling this season. Gold was the metal of choice here and it dripped off everything from necklaces to bejewelled clutches to the corners of the model’s eyes.

Who’ll be wearing it?…Penelope Cruz, Leighton Meester, Emma Stone, Camilla Belle, Katy Perry, Freida Pinto, Lily Collins
