  • Style Resolutions Update | The All-Weather Trench Coat

    Classic trench, The Gap

Hello all, I’d like to welcome the newest addition to the RCagz clan ^_^ 3 months in and I’ve finally ticked off my first item from this year’s style resolutions (yeah remember those).

I’ve been eyeing up this trench coat from The Gap for the past 2 months – its right on the high street on my way home from work, oh the hours I’ve spent wistfully staring at it in the window displays. I’ve tried it on multiple times, I even hinted at the ‘rents to get it for my birthday at the end of the month. But as I was far too impatient – and The Gap rather helpfully put it in their mid-season sale with 50% off, SCORE! – I took the plunge and decided to invest. And guys, I’m totally in love.

It’s that wonderfully classic caramel colour, with tortoise shell style buttons, and sits so comfy on my shoulders and around le bust. The length sits a little long – one of the perils of being petite! – but I quite like it that way.

I’m sure this is soon to be a wardrobe staple for me in the coming months to counteract the erratic British weather!

  • New Year’s Style Resolutions 2015

Eagle eyed followers will notice I didn’t round up my 2014 style resolutions last year…well, on top of giving myself a bit of an unscheduled social media/blogging break, looking back at them I didn’t do very well with them at all.

It may be the ‘older head on younger shoulders’ thing I seem to have at the moment, but I feel like I’ve hit my stride when it comes to my personal style and know what I want to wear and what I need in my wardrobe.

So, instead of focusing on a set of style rules to follow for the year, I’ve picked out 5 key pieces I’m going to aim to get in my wardrobe, as I start to build up my grown-up capsule style.

    The All-weather Trench

There’s no hiding my love of Burberry trench coats – heck I even blogged about my love of the trench last year. And whilst I don’t think my budget can quite stretch to the ultimate goal of owning a classic Burberry mac (in cream with dark brown trimming and the iconic ‘check’ print inside…yep I’ve planned this), I don’t think a decent quality trench coat is out of reach.

    The Perfect Day-to-Night LBD

Though I’m not necessarily working in the most formal office anymore, there’s no doubt a little black dress which can be dress up and down to reach for in times of major distress. I’m hoping for something cap-sleeved, at that magical ‘just above the knee/acceptable for the workplace’ length.

    ‘Oxford’ Brogues

When in Rome, right? I used to own a pair of faux leather Oxfords I used to wear to my Saturday job (they went with everything). They’ve since fallen apart and I never replaced them. I do own a lighter fabric pair of flat brogues for the Summer months and a nicer patent black pair from Zara for work, but a sturdy pair of leather Oxfords is on my wish list of this year.

    The Levi-esque Flannel Shirt

It may be the ‘grunge’ revival, it may be my slight obsession with 5 Seconds of Summer coming to fruition, but I really want a decent dark red tartan check flannel shirt. It needs to be big enough to fall a little slouchier on me and in a specific kind of check print. I’m hoping eBay will be my friend to secure this.

    The ‘Safari’ Shirt Dress

Here’s an item that not only fits in well with upcoming trends for Spring 2015 but is something that makes it’s way round again and again. Military dress. Shirt dress. Safari/Khaki dress. Whatever you call it, this timeless piece will probably be the easiest to acquire. I’m looking for breathable fabric for the Summer with a little more quality behind it, so am hoping places like Mango, Zara and The Gap will be hoping onto this runway trend asap!

  • 2014 New Year’s Style Resolutions

Happy New Year! Time to set some Sartorial goals, check out my 5 Style Resolutions below…

    2014 resolutions Getting Ruthless
    #1 | Getting Ruthless
A new year is a good time to get organised and that includes my mismatched wardrobe choices. I have a lot in there that I don’t actually wear and haven’t worn for over a year. There’s also a few bits that don’t actually fit me, but seem to be holding onto. It’s time for a clearout and I can’t afford to get sentimental. Besides, it’s a good opportunity to donate them to a better cause.
    2014 resolutions Plain and Simple#2 | Plain & Simple
Once I’ve cleansed my wardrobe, I’m paring it down. I love patterns and have gotten better at incorporating colour, but there’s nothing wrong with a making sure these pieces have a nice blank canvas to settle on first. So plain t-shirts, blouses, neutral knitwear and staple shoes – all of course of a decent quality! – are on the agenda for 2014.

The past few years I’ve been looking towards the Hollywood hills for inspiration (see last year’s resolutions for reference). There’s definitely nothing wrong with that, but it’s worth remembering that these ladies live where the weather is warm and sunglasses are a staple.
Nope. It’s time to look a little closer to home for inspiration, namely to those ladies walking the streets of mainland Europe. Their climate is closer to our own the UK so they’re also pro’s at layering and cold weather dressing. Besides who wouldn’t want to dress as the Parisians do, and envy the effortless cool of Scandinavian style.

Just because I’m paring down doesn’t mean I can’t have a little fun with accessories. I have a nice little collection of pieces already and I’ve developed a love for statement necklaces at the moment, but I’d love to get my hands on more. Etsy and blogger shops will be my first port of call for pieces that are a bit more unique than the highstreet!
    2014 resolutions High end treat
    #5 | A High-end Treat
I’m either gonna love myself or deeply regret this one. 2014 is gonna be a landmark year for me – hopefully! – finishing University and starting my ‘real adult’ life. So in celebration of that, I’m making a promise to myself that after almost two decades in education I’m treating myself to something a little out of my usual budget. Whether that be a coveted Chanel lipstick or Marc Jacobs purse or – dare I say it – Burberry trench. I’m buying it. End of story.
