  • An Ode To Basics

    ode-to-basics-header
    Dear Basics,

    I don’t wear you enough. I should but I don’t.

You feel too simple, even dull at times and I often forget you exist whenever a new fashion season rolls in. I get too seduced by the bright and shiny shop windows and endless e-newsletters proclaiming that these are the new must-have items to wear instead of you.

I call you basic but you have other names too.

    Far more flattering names like

    • ‘staple’,
    • ‘classic’
    • ‘timeless’

I prefer the last, because when the twinkling excited feeling of having fresh in season design fades, you’re always there to soothe my wardrobe dilemmas like a warm blanket time and time again.

You’re part of that ‘capsule wardrobe’ that I crave to live by but never seem to have. You’re the solid foundation to build on.

The lazy girl’s answer to a quick fashion fix.

So, I’m sorry I don’t appreciate you more basics. Take this as my tribute to you.

  • Inspiration #14 | Acceptable in the 80’s

Hot off the back of my last ‘Inspiration’ post on The Heathers and my current obsession with Taylor Swift’s 80’s-tastic new song ‘Out Of The Woods’, I’ve been rekindling my love of the 1980s.

I also recently came across a playlist on 8Tracks called 80s Boombox and oh man everyone needs to listen to it play it through at least once. It’s pure cheese, synth-tastic and seriously the only the thing I’ve been listening to the past week.

There’s a reason why my 18th birthday was themed in this era, the music is honestly quite unbeatable and I dare you not to start dancing along to Huey Lewis & the News or start miming along into a hairbrush to ‘We Are Not Alone’, ‘In Your Eyes’ or ‘Man In Motion’.

  • Brooklyn’s Here | Brooklyn Industries

I often talk about finding new and exciting little Independent brands online, but Brooklyn Industries was a fantastic brand I literally stumbled upon walking around Union Square when I visited in New York. At first glance, with their downtown hipster-ish vibe, Brooklyn Industries is feels very similar to brand here in the UK like Bank, Republic or – dare I say it – Urban Outfitters. Their collections are a really cool mix of urban street wear and smarter forever pieces, not to mention their graphic t-shirt range is pretty awesome. The only thing I ended up buying was a bag for my mum but my oh my I really could’ve bought out the whole store.

Like I’ve said upon first glance Brooklyn Industries is just a really awesome store, as I delved further into the brand I found out about their story. Behind the brand is a bustling network of home grown manufacturing and support for local designers, artists and people. In fact the name ‘Brooklyn Industries’ certainly serves them well to describe their approach. Part of the charm of much of the clothing range is seeing the pride in New York based talent, as seen with their graphic t-shirt range emblazoned with imagery and typography celebrating the city.

As well as this Brooklyn Industries keen on supporting the local community in Manhattan, Brooklyn and beyond, they’re big on social responsibility and sustainability. Not only are these values fed through their eco-collections and vegan pieces, but their stores are designed and built around ‘green’ materials and decked out with vintage furniture instead of buying brand new.

So, a fab company with a heart with fantastic collections! Awesome right? My only downside (for us Brits at least) is that their very much still based in the USA. At present, shipping from their site is pretty steep (think pre-UK shipping Sephora prices and add a couple of dollars), but hey nothing’s gonna stop me from stockpiling the wish list above for when I have some extra cash or maybe afford to fly all the way to New York again or…hey Brooklyn Industries why not bring a taste of this beautiful borough to London town sometime, hey? ;)
