    Sept in books
Wahey have managed to actually read some books this month!
Code Name Verity | Elizabeth Wein
I reviewed this ages ago for Blogger’s Bookshelf, so can read the full review there. In summary, it’s 1943 and the reader have been transported to an abandoned hotel in Nazi occupied France, where Queenie, a British spy, has been captured and tortured by the Gestapo. Her captors soon convince her to become a collaborator and she has been allowed to write down the events that led to her capture in the hope she will divulge some secrets about the British War Effort. She relents but only so much so that she can also tell the story of her best friend Maddie, the pilot who flew her to France.
I confess that I usually avoid historical based novels, as I find many get too bogged down in the details of the time period. Wein, however manages to weave this in seamlessly within the girls’ stories and for the most part the the information she writes about is necessary for the story. The account Queenie provides ends up becoming so much more than a forced confession but an incredible account of two best friends who make a sensational team and it was great to read about two strong female characters.
The Cuckoo’s Calling | Robert Galbraith
Another book I reviewed for Blogger’s Bookshelf! This is Galbraith’s (aka Ms Jo Rowling’s) first crime novel and the first novel following hardened ex-military turned detective Cormoran Strike. Strike is called upon to investigate the case of Lula Landry, a woman who’s life is a million miles away from Strike’s own, who plunged to her death from the balcony of her lavish London apartment. Her brother John, sought Strike’s help and is convinced her death was something more cold blooded than the police ruling of a crazed suicide. By Strike’s side is unlikely temp Robin, who balances out the detective’s harsh personality.
This was another great read and you can see my full review on Blogger’s Bookshelf. It’s a typical ‘whodunnit’ with an unlikely hero and a wonderfully crafted narrative.
    Wake | Robert J. Sawyer
And finally the book I got from the HP Alliance’s Apparating Library. Caitlin Decter is teenage math nerd and like most teenagers, is addicted to the internet. She is also blind, but has gotten through her life so far without any other complaints. When the opportunity arises from a Japanese scientist to implant a new piece of technology that may cure her sight, she jumps at the chance. It certainly works! But not in the way she could ever expect.
Apologies for the vague review but revealing too much would spoil the plot line. This was another enjoyable read and Caitlin proved to be a really likeable character. She doesn’t wallow in her disability, she’s quick witted and actually uses her lack to sight to her advantage (both before and after the surgery). My only gripe is the amount of unresolved subplots in the story – again, no spoilers for you guys! Though Caitlin’s story did come to a natural stopping point for now (the book is the first in a series), other stories laced throughout the novel are left in the open. Am hoping book two will start linking all of them together. I also found some of the language quite difficult, as someone not so versed in science and technology much of it went over my head. Despite this I found the story pretty page turning – again mainly to find out what the significance of all the subplots!
  • London Fashion Week | Favourite SS14 Collections

Next in my fashion week favourites is London’s offerings. Fashion week hit the capital with a hordes of crowds huddling against the typically British weather to see the eclectic mix of S/S collections, here’s my top five…
    Markus-Lupfer-SS14
Markus Lapfer | I’d never heard of Markus Lapfer before LFW, but wow this was all kinds of awesome. Aside from the fact that his lookbook on Style.com included cats (so freaking adorable!), the I love the 90s vibe of this collection. It feels like something that would look completely at home on the ‘Fresh Prince of Bell Air’ or ‘Clarissa Explains It All’ with the oversized sweaters and graphic prints. There’s also a childish quality to the embellishment, not to mention the tweenage rebel logos that spell things like ‘lame’ and ‘loser’. Also cats. Cat prints all over!
Who should be wearing this collection? Alexa Chung, Edie Campbell, Dakota Fanning, Victoria Justice
    Preen-SS14
Preen | Clean lines, asymmetry and bold geometry was the story at Preen this season. Set against colour blocked tones of candy pinks, fresh bright blues and monochrome, the shapes really make this whole collection pop.  Despite the bold and brash colour scheme the pieces themselves are quite ladylike, with the shapes and print work adding personality to the whole look.
Who should be wearing this collection? Kerry Washington, Emma Stone, Michelle Obama, Leighton Meester.
    House-Of-Holland-SS14
House of Holland | Whilst the media’s eyes were on the FROW of Holland’s show this year, mine were firmly on the collection presented on the runway. Henry Holland penned this an ode to Baz Lurhman’s Romeo and Juliet and the aesthetic is certainly there with the almost gaudy colour scheme, religious images and 90s inspired cuts. It’s typical OTT House of Holland but despite this some of the pieces comes off surprisingly demure with the ladylike belted tea dresses becoming fast favourites for me.
Who should be wearing this collection? Pixie Geldolf, Solange Knowles, Rita Ora, Eliza Doolittle
    Vivienne-Westwood-Red-SS14
Vivienne Westwood Red Label | Westwood’s collection is always a personal highlight for me any fashion week and this season was no exception. The colour palette was almost Autumnal but the clothes themselves give off a functional Summer in the UK feel, not quite sandals and flip flops but Sunday in the park attire. In fact it’s like Westwood took the stereotypical Sloane Ranger and made her take a tumble through the park bushes. As always the pieces are executed beautifully and in typical Vivienne Westwood fashion, personal favourite include the many printed floral pieces like the draped dress above and floral blouse/bright red skirt combo. Of course we can’t ignore the beauty choices, which only adds to the undone Sloane effect and overall drama of Westwood’s collection.
Who should be wearing this collection? Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Olivia Palermo, Paloma Faith
    Maria-Garchvogel-SS14
Maria Grachvogel | Another fairly new designer to me, much like Westwood pieces this was all about draping and flow. The colours again are muted but are much more water stained which fits well with the inkblot prints and silk/sheer fabrics used throughout. It’s not quite minimalist, but there’s a quiet simplicity about the undone blouses, draping gowns and oversized trousers. Even the more structured pieces accentuate the body’s natural movement.

Who should be wearing this collection? Nicole Richie, Vanessa Hudgens, Blake Lively, Heidi Klum

Let me know what your favourites were this year and keep an eye out for my Milan and Paris favourites in the next few days!

  • New York Fashion Week | Favourite SS14 Collections

So with the fashion week season in full swing, I thought I’d start round up my favourite collections from the first two finished weeks. First up is my top five from New York Fashion Week…

    RED-Valentino-SS14

Red Valentino | This whole collection is basically encompasses every trend I always hope comes through in Spring/Summer fashion week. Gorgeous floral prints, swing skirts, peter pan collars…ugh so pretty! It’s playful and wonderfully whimsical,  with the inspiration clearly from the botanical world. Personal favourites from the collection include the floral swing coat and black strapless dress with layered skirt.
Who should be wearing this collection? Ariana Grande, Elle Fanning, Bella Thorne, Alexa Chung

    3.1-Phillip-Lim-SS14

3.1 Phillip Lim | Lim looked towards geology this season, but whilst I love many of the precious stone prints on much of the collection – such as this dress – it’s the simpler pieces that have caught my eye. I feel like there were three different colour schemes happening here, with the prettier pastels, mustard and blue hues, then – my favourite – the darker and edgier tones towards the end of the run. I’m definitely hoping the rusty metallic textures end up filter into the shops sooner, I want to try and find a metallic shirt like this for this Autumn/Winter.
Who should be wearing this collection? Kristen Stewart, Lily Collins, Kate Bosworth, Emma Watson

    Ruffian-SS14

Ruffian | My favourite thing about fashion week is finding new designers that I haven’t heard about before and Ruffian is that designer for New York Fashion Week. The collection feels almost Autumnal because of the colour pallete, a mix of both preppy British and Parisian style with a ladylike feel. There’s subdued florals and houndslouth prints too, which no doubt will be a hit for the ‘granny-chic’ crowd.
Who should be wearing this collection? Taylor Swift, Sophia Coppola, Dianna Agron, Zooey Deschannel

    The-Row-SS14

The Row | The Olsens decided to travel the world for this season. There’s a clear Saudi businesswoman feel to much of the collection as well as layered Moroccan pieces, dressed up with a downtown New York City cool. The colour palette is fairly neutral, and much like the piece themselves they seemed inspired by the desert sands of North Africa and the Middle East.
Who should be wearing this collection? The Olsens (Mary-Kate, Ashley and Elizabeth), Tilda Swinton, Carey Mulligan, Jessica Alba

    Zac-Posen-SS14

Zac Posen | The entirety of Posen’s Spring range screams ‘red carpet ready’ to me, and there are few pieces that could translate into real life – unless you’ll be heading to a Ball at any point soon. This collection has divided a few opinions in the fashion world, but I love the romanticism of it all. It’s ruffles, silky fabrics and draping galore, and styling feels like a modern day Marie Antoinette crossed with a woodland fairy. Fantastical and, much like Valentino’s collection, is whimsical though in a completely different way. Plus just look at that finale gown!
Who should be wearing this collection? Daisy Lowe, Florence Welch, Katy Perry, Fan Bingbing
