    Two Weeks #11
    – Legend of Korra, Book 2. Aw yeah – Outfit for my friend’s leaving meal – Cocktails! – Saying goodbye & good luck to this one – Back to early starts for Uni – Autumn skies – Granola + Yoghurt brekkie – Ootd for Uni – Starbucks treat after a hard essay writing day – Payday purchases –

And we’re back to student life! How do I know? I’m currently suffering from Fresher’s Flu. Oh the joys of being back at University *shakes fist a first years*. Cold aside, it’s been so good being back. My first week went by in the blink of an eye and it’s safe to say that I’m really looking for to this year’s modules – oh you’re such a nerd Ria. It’s been utterly surreal walking around campus, mainly because I can’t remember where anything is after a year off, but also getting used to all of this independent time to myself again. As most of my lectures and seminars are in the morning, I’m determined not to slack in the afternoon both academically and with blogging too! This is the year it’s gonna count in both worlds so I’d better get cracking right?

  • Milan Fashion Week | Favourite SS14 Collections

It was the Italian’s time to shine with Milan Fashion Week in full flow a few days ago. And like London and New York before it, I thought I’d highlight just some of my favourites!….
    Versace-SS14
Versace | Usually a sexy free flowing Goddess, the Versace woman had a bit of an edge to her this season. A little bit Rock ‘n Roll, Donatella’s collection was laden with studs, denim, and hardware chains. Though I’m sure the darker pieces will become fast favourites on the red carpet in the coming months, it’s actually the lighter pieces that have caught my attention. The fabrics and cuts are certainly pretty, but in true Versace fashion, there are peek-a-book details and skirts that skim the body.
Who should be wearing this collection? Selena Gomez, Heidi Klum, Blake Lively, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
    Francesco-Scognamiglio-SS14
Francesco Sconamiglio | Another new designer to me, who’s actually be in the ‘biz’ for a while. This collection was the perfectly dainty for the S/S season. Florals, embroidery and lace may sound like a demure combination, but Scognamiglio’s collection anything but. Shirts were the sheerest of fabrics, as were many of the dresses, meaning a lot of skin on show. It never detracts from the beauty of the pieces though, I personally love the see-through white lace jacket.
Who should be wearing this collection? Emma Stone, Florence Welch, Elle Fanning, Rooney Mara
    Blumarine-SS14
Blumarine | Contrast seemed to be the theme at Blumarine. It was almost a completely monochrome collection, until ‘coral’ started making appearance, adorning skirts and jackets. There’s the pieces themselves, some more professional office wear – think pencil skirts, blazers and blouses – in comparison to the showstopper gowns – which will certainly made appearances on the red carpet. Texture-wise there there were tough leather and patent trousers, then there was silky sheer and delicate Spring embroidery.
Who should be wearing this collection? Lily Collins, Demi Lovato, Camilla Belle, Olivia Palermo
    Emilio-Pucci-SS14
Emilio Pucci | Pucci was all about sport-lux with a heavy dose of urban prints for S/S 14. Having worked with Rita Ora and Beyonce this year, it looks like the designer was keen to infuse their street style into the collection, which he does with much finesse. Deep purples, oranges and pinks stand out on the heavy black fabrics that are belted, cinching in those curves. Paired with open toed ankle boots, Pucci’s girl – like Versace – was tough to the core.
Who should be wearing this collection? Rihanna, Fergie, Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, Rita Ora
    Etro-SS14
Etro | Only one word is really needed for this collection. Prints. Prints. Prints. It was an explosion of colour and pattern, Etro with each piece as exciting as the next. There was nothing formal about this, and though there were many red carpet worthy pieces, the clothes were almost a capsule wardrobe for a Moroccan holiday.
Who should be wearing this collection? Jennifer Lopez, Lea Michelle, Gwen Stefani, Mary-Kate Olsen

So I’ve covered New York, London and now Milan. What have been your favourite collections so far? And keep an eye out for my Paris Fashion Week Faves next week!

    Sept in books
Wahey have managed to actually read some books this month!
Code Name Verity | Elizabeth Wein
I reviewed this ages ago for Blogger’s Bookshelf, so can read the full review there. In summary, it’s 1943 and the reader have been transported to an abandoned hotel in Nazi occupied France, where Queenie, a British spy, has been captured and tortured by the Gestapo. Her captors soon convince her to become a collaborator and she has been allowed to write down the events that led to her capture in the hope she will divulge some secrets about the British War Effort. She relents but only so much so that she can also tell the story of her best friend Maddie, the pilot who flew her to France.
I confess that I usually avoid historical based novels, as I find many get too bogged down in the details of the time period. Wein, however manages to weave this in seamlessly within the girls’ stories and for the most part the the information she writes about is necessary for the story. The account Queenie provides ends up becoming so much more than a forced confession but an incredible account of two best friends who make a sensational team and it was great to read about two strong female characters.
The Cuckoo’s Calling | Robert Galbraith
Another book I reviewed for Blogger’s Bookshelf! This is Galbraith’s (aka Ms Jo Rowling’s) first crime novel and the first novel following hardened ex-military turned detective Cormoran Strike. Strike is called upon to investigate the case of Lula Landry, a woman who’s life is a million miles away from Strike’s own, who plunged to her death from the balcony of her lavish London apartment. Her brother John, sought Strike’s help and is convinced her death was something more cold blooded than the police ruling of a crazed suicide. By Strike’s side is unlikely temp Robin, who balances out the detective’s harsh personality.
This was another great read and you can see my full review on Blogger’s Bookshelf. It’s a typical ‘whodunnit’ with an unlikely hero and a wonderfully crafted narrative.
    Wake | Robert J. Sawyer
And finally the book I got from the HP Alliance’s Apparating Library. Caitlin Decter is teenage math nerd and like most teenagers, is addicted to the internet. She is also blind, but has gotten through her life so far without any other complaints. When the opportunity arises from a Japanese scientist to implant a new piece of technology that may cure her sight, she jumps at the chance. It certainly works! But not in the way she could ever expect.
Apologies for the vague review but revealing too much would spoil the plot line. This was another enjoyable read and Caitlin proved to be a really likeable character. She doesn’t wallow in her disability, she’s quick witted and actually uses her lack to sight to her advantage (both before and after the surgery). My only gripe is the amount of unresolved subplots in the story – again, no spoilers for you guys! Though Caitlin’s story did come to a natural stopping point for now (the book is the first in a series), other stories laced throughout the novel are left in the open. Am hoping book two will start linking all of them together. I also found some of the language quite difficult, as someone not so versed in science and technology much of it went over my head. Despite this I found the story pretty page turning – again mainly to find out what the significance of all the subplots!
