  • A New Breed Of Girl Band | Haim

It’s so hard to find decent girl bands with guitars these days…so when Haim were recently announced the winners of BBC’s Sound of 2013, with their blend of R&B style synths, Fleetwood Mac-esque cool and killer hypnotic vocals, you could say I was pretty chuffed.

Hailing from California, the trio of sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim are not only set to take the music world by storm this year but have gotten fashion pundits and the blogsphere talking with their nu-hipster style. The girls draw inspirations from 70’s folk to tailored menswear to pretty vintage dresses to 90’s grunge all topped off with their soon-to-be signature long brunette locks. They’ve already modelled for ASOS and are tipped ones to watch by Vogue, Company and Interview magazine.
For me not only is their infectious music a breath of fresh air in a pure pop industry (and a welcome change to the drawl of Lana Del Ray – sorry not sorry :P) but their style, though not entirely new, is both fashion forward yet completely wearable…not to mention the fact they come Florence Welch-approved, can’t argue with that right?
But don’t let the pretty appearances fool you…these girls know how to play like the big boys….

    What do you guys think?

  • The New Style Stars of 2012

    Newbies 2012

    1.2.3.4.5.6.7.

With 2012 coming to a close it’s definitely time to reflect on the past year’s red carpet fashion, so I thought I’d showcase my favourite breakout style stars of 2012. For me, these seven ladies really stood out from the crowd this year and made their mark on the red carpet, leaving me excited to see what they have up their sleeves in 2013!

First up, someone very new to the game, Holland Roden. The Teen Wolf actress first caught my eye on the TCA red carpet line up in her Alice + Olivia dress and has been on point with her style since. She’s so far opted for fairly safe options with classic styling but with Teen Wolf gaining cult momentum, I’m hoping we’ll see more of her in the New Year.

With the focus usually on her co-star Zooey Deschanel, Hannah Simone was a pleasant surprise to see rise up amongst the best dressed at events. With her poker straight hair and sleek minimalist looks, she’s nailed her signature style early on and I’m looking forward to seeing whether she’ll start to experiment with her style next year.

Oh Ms Lawrence. Arguably the biggest breakout actress in the past year with the release of The Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawrence really took on the red carpet by storm this year. Though not always on point with her style, what I love about Jennifer is that she loves to experiment with her looks. Whether slightly gothic with poker straight hair or glamed up old Hollywood style, it’s really great to see someone in Young Hollywood having fun with changing up their look.

You may be wondering why Ginnifer Goodwin is on my list as a newbie, when she’s really a red carpet veteran. Well 2012 seemed to be the year she really pushed herself into the deep end of fashion. This year Ginnifer caught my attention at pretty much every event she went to and I’m always consistently surprised with her versatility – especially considering her pixie crop hairdo.

Another veteran Elizabeth Banks really stepped up alongside Jennifer Lawrence during The Hunger Games promo tour. A style chameleon, much luke Ms Lawrence, Elizabeth was a joy to watch out for and left you guessing what look she was going to go for next. I even dedicated a post to her on here!

With the Olympics coverage plastered on every screen around the world, there was only one woman who captured the hearts of the nation. Jessica Ennis not only proved to be a gold medal winning champion, but also no amateur to dressing well on the red carpet. I’m finding it wonderful that she shows so much support for British designers such as Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen, and it’s so refreshing to see such a positive role model on the red carpet.

And finally, a lady who really made her debut during the January awards season, Jessica Chastin captured my heart this year. Her red carpet formula has been fairly classic thus far, so I’m hoping she doesn’t slip into a failsafe category of dressing.

  • American Music Awards 2012 | Red Carpet Fashion Round Up

How’d this one slip through the net! The 40th American Music Awards were held this past weekend in L.A. and my it was good to see some decent red carpet action after so long….

Best dressed of the night is a joint award for me and went to Carly Rae Jepsen and Ginnifer Goodwin. Ms ‘Call Me Maybe’ look very glamorous and polished in a pale pink, embellished, Gomez Garcia gown. I loved the styling here and her hair-do. Ginnifer was a pleasant surprise presenter on the show. She looked 60’s stunning in an Oscar De La Renta tea dress, the whole look could be too pretty and prissy but Gin reigns the barbie pink with dark make up and her trademark crop hair.

Two country ladies who sparkled on the night were my girl Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. Taylor missed out of the best dressed for me, simply because I’m getting a little deja vu with this Zuhair Murad mini – her on stage outfit on the other hand? A.mazing! Carrie also took on an embellished gown by Abed Mahfouz. I love this look, she’s stepped a little out of her comfort zone yet still stuck to her own personal style.

Not everyone went for the gemstones. Ginnifer’s ‘Once…’ co-star Jennifer Morrison went for an elegant black Abed Mahfouz gown. Pink made her comeback in a sleek metallic Catherine Deane gown, she looked stunning here and I love the laser cut out details around the top.

Two ladies unafraid of making some serious style statements were Nicki Minaj and Christina Aguilera. Nicki was loud and proud in a bright Monique Lhullier gown and shockingly I don’t hate it. Her styling’s on point and she actually looks pretty swish when she doesn’t try so hard to make a statement. Christina wore a purple hued Pamella Roland gown, this is probably the best she’s looked in a while but I’m still not a fan of the tangoed skin and wig-like hair. Though this is much improved.

Not everyone had such a good night. Hot mess Ke$ha look fairly polished in her pale pink mini, even her hair and make up looked on point. Shame about the shoes. Too clunky and too heavy for such a pretty dress. Kelly Rowland also failed to impressed me here in her Naeem Khan mini and metallic sandals…yawn.

Other notable mentions in a sea of golden girls were Hayden Panetierre in Georgio Armani, Elisha Cuthbert in Editions by Georges Chakra and Heidi Klum in an Alexandre Vauthier Couture mini.

And finally two girls who strayed from the pretty minis and embellished gowns to give us something a little different. Gwen Stefani went for menswear in a a very chic Balmain jacket and leather look leggings. Whereas Kerry Washington went for a bright yellow Stella McCartney look with matching citrus accessories.
