  • 4 Women | 4 Decades | W Magazine’s 40 years of style

Sometimes procrastinating on Tumblr can be a good thing!

I recently found this amazing shoot from ‘W’ magazine on my dashboard and literally stopped in my tracks. The publication is celebrating their 40th anniversary with a cover story encompassing the distinct styles of the past 4 decades, with 4 of the best actresses of the 21st Century – in my opinion anyway.
The 1970’s is embodied by Rooney Mara who is almost unrecognisable from her usual minimalist style for bold printed Prada, that ‘oh-so-in’ wide brim hat and Autumnal colours.
Mia Wasikowska takes on the boldest of the 4 decades – and my personal favourite – the 1980’s in a Balenciaga bustier and bright neon make up.
In Dolce & Gabbana is the ever alluring Scarlett Johanssen, taking on the edgier grunge trend of the 1990’s.
And finally a very chic, Tilda Swinton-esque take on the Noughties (I hate that word…) with Keira Knightley in forever classic Chanel
Despite the striking differences in between the decades themselves, I love the overall theme of the spread and the other worldly green tint that ties the whole thing together. You can read more and see all of these images in glorious HQ here. I’ve also linked to each actress’ mini interview, just click on their names.

  • MTV VMA’s 2012: Red Carpet Fashion Round Up

It’s that time of year again when the MTV Video Music Awards roll into town, probably one of the more eccentric and fan fuelled awards ceremonies for music in the world. Though I didn’t care much for the award show itself this year (what can I say I’m turning into a cynical 20 year old lol) as always I was following the red carpet for hits and misses.

A surprise favourite and probably my best dressed was Rihanna. She turned out in a blinding white and surprisingly demure Adam Selman gown. Compared to her previous looks at such awards shows this is very angelic for the singer, who also debuted a brand new cropped hair do too. The combination of the simplicity of the gown and the minimalist style of the whole look ensures Rihanna looks extremely chic here.
Another favourite of mine, and possibly tied with Rihanna, was Holland Roden. The relatively new Teen Wolf star is slowly becoming one of my favourites to look out for on the red carpet and has also been a best dressed for me before. She looks very pretty in an embellished Pamella Roland dress. The whole thing feels little Taylor Swift crossed with Emma Stone and I loved it. Let’s hope she keeps up this winning streak.
Speaking of the country starlet. Taylor Swift also graced the red carpet in a very different look than usual. Normally one to drag out the sparkly prom dress, Taylor went for a sleek J Mendel trouser suit, paired with poker straight hair and a pop of red lipstick. It’s been nice to see her experiment with her style the past year. She looks fierce, grown up and so, so chic. This look has got to be one of my favourite of her’s so far.
Back from a stint playing happy families is post-baby Pink in a figure hugging Stella McCartney gown. In true Pink style her hair is coiffed and the look is very rock chic.
I did a double when the next person came up. Miley Cyrus walked the red carpet in a brand new look and looking a little bit like a Pink look-a-like. This Emilio Pucci gown is Miley’s most daring look to date and I’m not sure if I’m a fan. Prior to this she was doing surprisingly well in my books but this all seems a little too much of a change, it’s slightly jarring.

Not one to let the Americans have all of the fun a few British ladies also turned up to the awards. The Saturdays looked extremely poised and polished at their first outing at the show: from left to right Mollie, Una, Rochelle, Frankie and Vanessa.
Rita Ora was another surprise for me at this show, I had no idea she was even known that well in the states. She went for the OTT factor in a customised Emilio Pucci jumpsuit with big bold embellishments and a mesh panel. I’m not too much of a fan of this, may be to do with her shoes choice or the fit. It just doesn’t look that great for me.
Emma Watson was a nice surprise on the red carpet in one of her favourite designers, Peter Pilotto. The dress is lovely and vibrant and I love her shoes too, but the whole look feels a bit tired. She may not have wanted to attract too much attention to herself as she’s not really presenting or accepting anything, but I usually expect so much more.
Fellow jumpsuit wearer, Nikki Minaj, turned up in her standard hot mess uniform in a glittering designer suit. This, like with most of the attendees, was actually pretty tame for Nikki, I just really want her to realise what she looks like once in a while.
Joining Nikki on my not so great list is Alicia Keys. She’s normally either a hit or miss for me on the red carpet so I’m not surprised that I don’t like this ensemble. Her Alexandre Vauthier gown looks a little tin foil-ish for my liking and her seems too severe for her softer make up look. Very much a mismatch of styles here.
Lace was a big theme at the awards with both Kesha and Amber Rose taking on the Gothic trend. Kesha look almost unrecognisable in a lace mini, really hating on the shoes though. Amber went for an elegant gown, which highlighted her growing baby bump.
Katy Perry slipped quietly onto the red carpet in a very pretty but Gothic Elie Saab Couture gown from 2004. This a very demure look from Katy, considering she’s pulled out angel wings and big brassieres before. The gown itself is gorgeous and works well with her slick black hair, but at an event like the VMA’s I was expecting big wow moment from her. This is a passable look.
And finally I’ll finish with an amazing Olympian. Swimmer Missy Franklin looked fabulous in fitted red mini, flashing the best accessory of the night…a gold medal.

  • Fashion’s Night Out 2012 music video

It’s that time of year again! Fashion’s Night Out has arguably become one of the biggest events in the sartorial calender. This year FNO is well and truly global with events on nearly every single continent in the some of most stylish cities in the world.
Last year, FNO released a music video to promote the night featuring the cast of Glee interpreting Bowie’s ‘Fashion’ with Lea Michele on lead vocals. As a Glee fan I loved last year’s video, and as a proud supporter of Team Starkid it’s great to see Darren Criss heading up lead vocals on Madonna’s ‘Dress You Up’ with an all star cast of celebs making appearances. The cameos range from Alexander Wang to Taylor Swift, Karlie Kloss to Olivia Wilde, Coco Rocha to Usher, even a certain Ms Victoria Beckham makes an appearance. The video also showcases the charity t-shirt that will be sold at the New York night.
As a Darren fan and a fashion blogger this video is just perfection for me.

Will any of you be heading down to any of the events this year? Or just watching from afar?
