  • Thoughts On ‘Waitress’ & Women In The Narrative

    Waitress-Marquee
So just over a week ago, on our last night in New York, my sister and I headed off to the Brooks Atkinson Theater to watch one of the preview performances of the new musical Waitress. The musical is based on the 2006 movie penned by Adrienne Shelly, starring Keri Russell as a down and out waitress called Jenna in small town America who finds out she’s pregnant with her not-so-fabulous husband’s baby.

Aside from trying not to freak out because Sara Bareilles was sat watching the show in the stalls downstairs and fangirl-ing when Jessie Mueller (who plays Jenna in the musical marvelously) came on stage, after coming out of the theatre I found myself awake with too many thoughts on what I’d watched and about women on Broadway in general.

  • Favourite Underrated Female Youtubers

Youtube is DEAD! Or so the critics say. If I’m being honest, I’m bored of conversations that proclaim lack of creativity and original content on Youtube in favour of sponsored videos, ‘hilarious’ challenges and vlogs. Yes, the generic content rises to the top but that shouldn’t stop us from looking a little harder at where the good stuff actually is.

So rather than focus on subscriber count here are some of my favourite underrated female Youtubers who are kicking some serious butt right now.

    Hamilton: The Musical

Ok this post has been a long time coming, but I need to wax poetic about the musical phenomenon you’ve probably never heard of.

To sum up the story very briefly, Hamilton is a dramatised version of the life of Alexander Hamilton. Who’s that I hear you cry? Well, he’s one of the lesser known founding fathers of America, the first Treasury Secretary of the United States and established the first National Bank. He’s also the dude on the $10 Bill.

Sound boring? I thought so too – and this is coming from the girl who’ll happily accept a musicals based on the Gospel of St. Matthew, the Newsboys Strike of 1899 and a German play set in the 1800s*. But then guys I picked up the cast album a few months ago and fell head over heels in love.
