Pretty much the award show of the Summer is the Teen Choice Awards, held in L.A. last Sunday night. It was a barrage of bright colours, beaming sunshine and fresh looks on the purple carpet this year…

Glee’s shining star, Lea Michele, definitely caught the eye of many in a glittering Atelier Versace mini. She’s pulled this kind of look off before, but what really made me put her up for Best Dressed was her carefree Summer styling. I love her slightly lighter wavy locks [does this bode a hair change for a Ms Rachel Berry too?] plus her softer make up. For the first time I feel like she isn’t trying too hard to impress and it works.
Tied for Best Dressed with Ms Michele is relative newcomer to the red carpet, Holland Roden. I was pleasantly surprised by her vintage inspired look and fell pretty hard for this Alice + Olivia dress. Thought the print is very Autumnal, lighter styling helps keep this Summer event appropriate.

White is always a popular colour at these shows and can be quite hard to pull off.
Taylor Swift takes it on with elegance, as per usual, in a Maria Lucia Hohan chiffon dress. As much as I adore this look, Taylor seems to favouring this style of dress at the moment and it’s giving me major deja vu and even looks a little similar to last year’s TCA look.
Another fresh face was Crystal Reed, who took on the white trend in a Marchesa dress. Thank heavens for the shoulder detail, without it the look may have fallen completely flat for me.

Not everyone went neutral for the event. Both Selena Gomez and Lucy Hale went all out in bright mini dresses. Selena’s pink Dsquared number is certainly event appropriate and definitely fits with her personality. I am, however, left wishing she would just sweep back her hair a little, the Cheryl Cole-esque extensions are not doing any favours.
I much prefer Lucy’s citrus coloured Wes Gordon look, especially her golden accessories and side swept plait.

The two female stars of the New Girl were also working the purple carpet. Zooey Deschanel is notorious for her hit and miss looks at events. For me this look is a miss. This is best shot of Zooey I could find and the angle is probably not the most flattering for the dress. Despite this her Monique Lhuillier dress is just a little ill fitting and the accessories are dull.
Her co-star Hannah Simone on the other hand rocked a Mary Katranzou mini. The print is just amazing here and her styling is great.

This year’s TCA’s were great for showcasing a wide variety of looks. Victoria Justice went for a flowing, breezy Gomez Garcia dress, again I love the print here and her styling is very much on point. Nina Dobrev went for a simplistic look in a J.Mendel mini dress with some structural detailing on the skirt and metallic accessories. Hayden Panettiere went for an embellished Zuhair Murad purple mini and matching shoes. I’m a little unsure of whether there was too much matching with this look. Disney teen Debby Ryan wore a geometric print Bibhu Mohapatra dress. I feel like she could’ve done without the sleeves on the dress as this feels a little demure for the TCA’s.

It wasn’t just dresses out at the TCA’s, both Chelsea Kane and Carly Rae Jepsen rocked some shorts in the Summer sun. I love Chelsea’s colourful Alice + Olivia shorts paired with a neutral French Connection top and bright blue heels, it’s the perfect Summer ensemble. Carly went for a smarter look in a Lisa Ho jacket and shorts, the print detailing definitely adds some interest to the whole look.

One of the hosts for the event was new X Factor USA judge Demi Lovato. She wore an extravagantly detailed Falguni & Shane Peacock mini dress. While the dress itself is stunning and I do think her shoe choice works here, I can’t deal with her hair here. With such an over the top dress I would’ve preferred her to take a go for a simpler hair do. But I much prefer this look to her one from last year.

Not all of the looks were that impressive at the event. Nikiki Reed really impressed me last year but she almost blended into the background in a Contrarnian New York mini. It looks a little ill fitting at the bust and the whole styling feels too Autumnal for the TCA’s.
Disney’s newest starlet Bella Thorne wore an All Saints skirt and top paired with Brian Atwood heels. It’s not terrible but the whole look feels a little too Miley Cyrus circa 2008, I’d like to see her develop her own style on the red carpet in the future.

It wasn’t all about young Hollywood. Gwen Stefani hit the event in head to toe YSL with the rest of No Doubt. I’m a little wary of her red carpet look; I’m all for moving forward with the times but this feels like Gwen’s trying too hard to fit into the new Gaga/Minaj fashion crowd. I much prefer her on stage look, this is the Gwen we know and love right there.

Keep on wishing…
