This is a first in Wishing For Chanel red carpet reporting history…I fell asleep through most of the VMAs coverage this year. Whoops!
Never fear, it’s taken some time but I’m all caught up on the gossip (Cyrus vs Minja, Kanye 2020, Bad Blood Squad goals and all!) and more importantly the gowns! As always judging the looks from the red carpet for this particular event is…interesting to say the least. There’s less focus on the traditional and more on the outlandish, it’s totally unique in that respect, which require a totally different perspective to judge fashion standards by than say the Oscars or Grammys.
So, gear up, it’s about to get weird. Here’s some of my favourite looks from this year’s MTV Video Music Awards…
Best Dressed Award | Vanessa Hudgens
I didn’t even expect this little lady on the night but my oh my was she a ray of sunshine in hurricane of weird. Surprisingly (for me anyway) this year’s best dressed is going to Vanessa Hudgens, who looked like a radiant fairy queen in this gorgeous Naeem Khan. gown. I’m very much in love with the floral details on this peach number, as well as her choice of golden jewels and hair accessories which she used to style up the look. What a beaut!
Queen of the Night Award | Nicki Minaj
In the absence of a certain Mrs Carter, Nicki Minaj stepped up to the spotlight for the most bootylicious look of the evening. She sauntered onto the red carpet in this glittering, gold gown by La Bourjoisie. All jibes and so-called catfights aside, Nicki really stole the show in this as the true Queen of the VMAs. There’s not doubt the gown is breathtaking and Nicki’s attitude totally carries the look into showstopping territory.
The ‘This Red Carpet Thing Is A Breeze Innit’ Award | Taylor Swift
We’re a good way into the 1989-era of Taylor’s style and I feel like she’s finally finding her feet. This Ashish look is a perfect example of that. The crop top is now style staple in Taylor’s wardrobe, but she’s upgraded the outfit with the bronze, silver and gold patterns and super slouchy pants (which look like the comfiest things ever). Styled up with an uber exaggerated cat eye and matching metallic heels and this look’s an effortless winner for me.
Cool For The Summer Award | Karlie Kloss
It may be September but Karlie was truly living for the Summer in this tangerine Louis Vuitton maxi dress. Perfectly casual for the more laidback nature of the VMAs, she even kicked it back in a pair of gold sandals instead of heels (she’s tall enough without them I suppose, comfort over fashion! My kinda girl!). Accompanied by an easy breezy loose hairstyle, this is a no-sweat look for Karlie.
Shooting Star Award | Cara Delevingne
Also accompanying Swift on the red carpet was model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne. Her Saint Laurent mini was definitely my favourite look from the Bad Blood squad. The star print and fringing is totally fun, but the monochrome keeps it classy.
Best Dress Vlogger Award | Amanda Steele
This is a red carpet first for me – I think? Celebs aren’t the only ones rocking the red carpet at awards shows anymore, us Internet-folk at infiltrating the events and stealing the show too. I stumbled on Amanda’s look flicking through the VMA albums and stopped dead in my tracks. The beauty vlogger’s look is seriously on par with some of the other attendees! Just look at all the asymmetric details and bold graphics on this crop top/skirt combo by Aussie brand Asilio.
Mint Green Dream Award | Bella Thorne
Among the musicians of the night was the wonderfully dainty looking Bella Thorne, who stole my heart in this super fresh mint green midi dress by Maria Lucia Hohan. The flow of the gown so honestly so beautiful and Bella looks super elegant with her top knot updo and metallic accessories.
The Rising Star Award | Halsey
One of the newest additions to the red carpet on the night was singer-songwriter Halsey. Likely to be the first of many outing at these kinds of events, Halsey played it fairly safe in a sleek black and navy jumpsuit, styled up with her slicked her crop hairdo, minimal accessories and pop of red lipstick. I’m mainly loving this as it showcasing her bad-ass tattoos – which are red carpet worthy accessories in themselves. If this is anything to go by we’ve got some good red carpet looks ahead for this girl. (*totally not being biased about including this one. Nope. What are you talking about…)
Honorable mentions | The Bad Blood Squad
I feel a need to give a little shout out to the biggest posse of the evening. Taylor not killed it in her Ashish number, but arrived at the event with her girl gang all of whom starred in her Bad Blood music video. Roll call (from left to right), Gigi Hadid, Martha Hunt, Hailee Steinfeld, Cara Delevingne, Selena Gomez, Taylor (duh) Serayah, Mariska Hargitay, Lily Aldridge, and Karlie Kloss.
Though fashion was a bit of a mixed bag, there’s no denying the impact they made walking the red carpet together and joining Taylor later on screen as she accepted the award for Video of the Year.
